We were in Amsterdam last July. for 2 days before boarding a Grand Circle River cruise.

We stayed at The Toren.. only a few blocks from the Damm Square and the main area.

Fanastic boutique hotel.. lots of charm, get help getting reservations for dinner.

We did the hop on hop off bus.. Great.

Also, did the Viator tours (viator.com) tours of the windmills/ wooden shoes..
You can actually book this right in the city... but the viator tours gives you another layer of protection. It was a half day bus tour out of the city.

Also,, do plan to do a tour of the Red Light District.. you can walk thought it, but it is fun in a small group Viqator has a tour, but we did the newamsterdamtours.com
