I do have some thoughts running through my mind on this incident. We do enjoy traveling also and have cruised and are NOT quite sure yet if cruising is really for us. We have only gone 2-3 times and had a bad experiences the last being both of us came back to the Villages and ended up in hospital as 98% of ship got sick. It was a terrible experience. That however did not deter us from cruising again. We try to remain positive but at the same time learn from mistakes. This Carnival incident has me concerned for several reasons. First of all, when this happened, the ship was 150 miles from Mexico. they could have easily gone into Mexico and flew everyone home. Instead they choose to travel 500 miles into US keeping these people on board walking around in the feces urine stained decks. (YUK - disgusting) Standing on line TRYING to any sort of food for hours. We air drop food into foreign countries and yet we could not get these people the basic staples?? I know I personally would have been sick over this and found it very stressful. After all we are seniors and not 18 anymore. So my question is did the cruise line choose PROFIT OVER SAFETY?? also there are reports this ship had problems weeks before the sailing!! And of course the no 1 problem with the cruises is that the cruise line industy is NOT REGULATED AT ALL!! So basically once you leave the port you are at their mercy. Now that is FOOD FOR THOUGHT before I cruise again. Also we are definitely not the sue happy type people, believe in taking responsibility for ourselves and realize things happen but lately quite a bit is happening on cruises and maybe it's about time they have some sort of REGULATION. If not, this will likely continue and possibly get much worse.

my question is...after the facts are in and assuming something was not done correctly/timely or whatever....given the facts CArnival has offered to put the clock back as close to normal as possible form a financial perspective.....financial retribution is all that can be done after all.

So how does getting more money make the end result any more acceptable. The "pain and suffering" are lawyer talk for increasing their fee....it does not make a bad situation better.

Too many lawyers abusing the legal system with too many sheeple willing and able to pursue it.

It might be a case that should in front of a JURY to let them decide what each passenger is entitled to if negligence is in fact a determining factor. I hate the "sue happy" type of people but in this case perhaps Carnival should have gotten them off the ship ASAP as I stated in above msg. Will be interesting to see how it turns out.

for those who are tallying up numbers like $10-$25,000 per passenger I have asked several times how does raising the number make the incident anymore tolerable (less impactfull?)?

I don't get the let's gouge them while we got 'em mentality.

And just how would a jury determine what is an appropriate amount???
A totally unrealistic approach. Four thousand different people, 4,000 different situations......totally impossible.

Some folks just need to step back from the let's sue them for what we can get mentality (ambulance chasers)....created by the over population of attorneys some of which are under employed who know how to work the judicial system.....and get back to being real.

What's that old saying, stuff happens !! Yes, I'm sure it was an awful experience, but you can't sue someone every time you have an awful experience. It was very unfortunate what happened. I'm sure they didn't set out to have an engine fire to make everyone miserable.

yes stuff happens. yes you can't sue everyone. But WHY did Carnival make the decision to go 500 miles with people on board rather than the 150 to get to land in Mexico? that's the question? Did they put PROFIT OVER SAFETY??? REMEMBER folks, the cruise industry is NOT regulated!! You get on the ship, you are at their mercy!! Am I anxious to get on another ship? NO Will I go again, probably !! But I will keep an eye on what goes on as far as maybe starting to get some type of regulation in place to PROTECT passengers. After all, they are spending their hard earned money and assuming they will be safe.

I believe they said the ship was doing some heavy drifting away from Mexico. I also think it would have been pretty difficult to get everyone off & on their way in a foreign port as opposed to the US. They had talked about that on the news.

I heard the same thing. Plus, many of the folks onboard had no passports, which would have immensely complicated reentry into the US.

boarding a vessel leaving the USA??? Without a passport??? Really???

It doesn't matter if they weren't going to stop any where. If those poor folks were by chance disemabrked in Mexico it could have been a disastor beyond what they already experienced. And some may still not be home yet!!!!

Passport? Don't leave home (the USA) without it.

I believe the Triumph was supposed to have Cozumel as a port call. That would mean that ALL the passengers would have to have showed a passport when embarking the ship - no matter if the passenger never planned to get off the ship in Mexico.

I have been on cruises when some dummies show up without their passports and they are denied boarding.

Yes passports were NOT an issue. Who leaves home without one today especially when ports of calls are in other countries. ?? Would Not make sense to me??

Many states are issuing an Enhanced Driver's License which is a driver’s license that can also be used as a cross-border travel document to enter the U.S. by land and sea.
And you can now get a U.S. Passport Card – This is a limited-use international travel document valid for entry into the U.S. by land or sea from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean or Bermuda, per the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative.
However, the enhanced License and the Passport Cards are NOT valid for international air travel.

Just got back from cruise on Carnival Dream 2/9---talked to a gentleman and his wife --- they were in their 70's---first cruise---no passports--just birth certificates and photo ID. We went to Honduras, and Mexico. I have seen others use birth certificates.

Have been on 10 cruises. In December we were on Carnival Legend. Had been on this ship about 7 years ago and loved it. THIS TIME........was one horror after another. No, we are not sueing, did not even write a letter. Just staying away from Carnival and other cruise ships until they work out some problems they all seem to be having. Besides living in TV is the best cruise ever!
