Default Cedar Key

We took a drive over to Cedar Key and found it to be very quaint. Small, but loaded with nice places to eat.

We went there on a whim one day last January. It was a "Honey, let's go watch the sunset on the coast." It was a quick ride, about 90 mins, saw the sunset, had a nice dinner. They say there's a fun seafood festival Feb 14th weekend that starts off their busy season. It's a cute sleepy little town.

They do have a few cute shops. I was there last year, they had small beachy shops.

Its a tiny little town, really cute. If they had a craft fair or something it would be great!

We were there years ago before moving here and thought it was a really enjoyable day trip. Personally it reminded me of the small artsy enclaves you find in New England, which of course made me very happy. I hope to go back if I can get my husband to leave here. LOL

CK has one school with all grades, and has a clam industry...good place to bring home some fresh fish or shrimp. the airport is a hoot with a very short runway for any aviation buffs, you may need to "go around" to land there. It is a great place to take a kayak or canoe and paddle out to the smaller keys, I think there's one called "Pencil" as there was once a pencil factory. Don't miss the history museum...it's off the beaten path and well worth a visit. Once a year there are ferries and admission to a bird sanctuary with a lighthouse that UF operates. I never saw so many osprey.

We didn't think it worth the almost 2 hour drive. Think there are better places closer.

Name 'em. I can't think of a coastal community devoid of Wal-Mart, CVS, billboards, car dealerships, nail salons, McDonalds...in other words, unspoiled, other than Cedar Key, Steinhatchee, or Suwannee. I may be biased as I have been going to Cedar Key since I was a child. The biggest change in all those years has been the introduction of the clam industry. The best Cuban sandwich I've ever eaten was from the little bait shop called Fishbonz.

We went there about 10 years ago. Stopped to spend the night and check it out on our way to Tampa.

It is more like old-time FL. If I remember correctly, it was a little fishing village.

IMO, it is one of those places that is best suited to people looking for places that are "Quaint" and "Off the Beaten Path".

They have a restaurant there called, I think it's Tony's, on the left when you come in. Their clam chowder has won national awards and is unbelievable. They even brought a food truck to The Villages to serve the chowder for the Chili or BBQ competition one year. Expensive at $16/qt but worth it.
