We love to cruise and really like Princess.
I do agree about the 3-4 day cruises (especially
to the Bahamas) have more party type people
that we didn't care for.
We also don't do formal nights and love going to the
buffet those nights.
Cruise Critic is a great resource.

We are taking our 54th cruise next month. Elite on Celebrity and Diamond Plus on Royal Caribbean. These are our favorites. We have been on most cruise lines.
One thing to think about when doing a shorter cruise, it's a lot different than a 7 night. It's a lot more rushed so you don't quite get the relaxed feeling you get on a longer cruise. The ships are also older.
Being new to cruising, definitely use a travel agent to book. AAA or Ocala Travel are both good.
On formal nights, most people do dress very nice. You can skip the dining room that night and go to one of the other restaurant options. The other nights are casual. No jeans or shorts.
Cruise Critic has a lot of info. Also you can look at the ships layout on the cruise line websites.
Lots of activities and shows on the cruises.
What ever you choose, just relax and have a wonderful time.
