You can compare relative crime rates of every major city in the US one against the other here:

2024 Compare Crime Rates

Ocala is much more dangerous than NYC.
Leesburg is much more dangerous than NYC.

Orlando is much more dangerous than NYC.
Peoria IL is much more dangerous than NYC.
Phoenix is much more dangerous than NYC.

I know certain news media loves to attack and endlessly play videos of crimes but NYC is safer than most cities in the US.
Totally agree with the latter part of the post. The media, take your pick preys on the uniformed. You know, the ones that watch cable news and fall asleep to the blue screen.

That said, crime statistics are based per capita.....so if little old Podunk KY (not sure if that’s a real one!) , has a double murder/suicide, effectively, for that day at least....is the most dangerous town in the country. You can correct me if that’s wrong but these types of statistics can be misleading and at the least ambiguous

I went to the link that was provided in that post for comparing two cities. And then put in TV and NYC. Was interesting.

It is interesting how the stats are used to come to these results.

Take a look at St Louis, Kansas City (very dangerous) vs NYC.

Is it true that NYC is getting very dangerous?

Have you been there recently? How safe did you feel?

Would be interesting to hear from those of you that grew up in NYC...and what your thoughts are on this subject. Also I've always been fascinated by the history of NYC so share stories of growing up there please if you would.

TIA
Why? Why do you think they escape from NY when they can?

Today (3/29/24) the Governor of NY was turned away at the wake for slain NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller at a funeral home on Long Island Today. Clapping could be heard as she left. Wanna take the subway when you go there? With the disconnect of law enforcement, and the city and state government, for myself I don’t put much stock in those comparisons.

I go fairly often. I’ve never thought about being scared. Just pay attention and you’ll be fine. It’s my favorite city. I’ll be there in Dec. I take the subway alone. Walk the streets alone and have never felt unsafe. ( not recommending you do that ) I’ve felt more unsafe in downtown Orlando.

I've visited NYC many, many times. I've always enjoyed the trip, but after a few days, I couldn't wait to leave... The stench of the subways, the filth in the streets wear on you...

Of, late, The National Guard patrolling the subways (due to the increased crime/attacks on the train platforms and in the train cars) give me pause...

The noticeable increase in random women getting punched in the face while walking down a busy street give me pause...

The random attacks, stabbings, shootings, give me pause...

That said, I don't see myself visiting any time soon...

We do miss it

Miss the outstanding ethnic foods we used to have regularly.

Miss Broadway shows and all the things NYC has to offer.

Still would never move back at this stage of our life

I was wondering about this... are there any good Thai, Japanese, Indian, etc places in Ocala?

Thanks everyone for your responses!

So you either believe FBI data, and the methodology is shown, or you can form a conclusion based on news stories that fit your preconceived ideology. Got it.

I'm sure the National Guard was deployed in the subways because the FBI said NYC is safe...
