Default Morel mushrooms kit

I crave morels especially in spring when I was kid and use to find bread bags full. My grandma would batter them up and fry them. They have very unique flavor compared to other mushrooms

Thinking about buying kit trying them in my vegetable pots?

Amazon.com : TRUE morel mushroom grow kit grow morel mushrooms at home and garden : Patio, Lawn & Garden

Morels are notoriously difficult to grow because they require specific earth temperatures at each part of their life cycle as well as soil with specific decaying wood. They often also require a symbiotic relationship with other plants. And there is over 1000 different species of morels.

But a lot of people enjoy trying to grow them at home. If you would really like to try this then I would suggest you download the reddit app, join (it’s free) and search the “mycology” forum. There you can find lots of similar minded people trying to grow morels and learn about what has and has not worked for them. Reddit is a good resource for information on how to do almost anything.

I agree the app is worth a try. I had about a 75% log fail rate, following directions. Did give the room an earthier smell

Back in Minnesota we'd hunt them in late May usually, usually after a day or so of wet, warm weather. They'd grow best next to windfall somewhat rotten trees; elms in particular. But they weren't limited to that: One day we found a bunch growing next to a swale in wide-open country.

Delicious, though. Mom would use them in hot dishes especially with wild rice, or fried as a side dish. She used to dry them as well: they'd keep almost indefinitely that way.

But thanx for the kit info and link. Thinking I might try that: it has been awhile since I've eaten morels.

In these types of kits, the quality of the growing medium is a key component. I would personally opt for one of the slightly more expensive kits that gives you everything you need where you mostly just moisten a bag and then put it in a warm dark place.

Good luck!

In wild I never found morels on rotted logs beside or around yes, but never popping up on log.

Morels are extremely difficult to grow. I have a high school classmate, Charles Wilson, a retired MD, who has spent years developing a technique to grow them in Central Illinois. He found the best source of information is the Mycology Dept at Michigan State University. I followed Charley's travails for years before he succeeded, somewhat, last year in growing a crop. I wish you good fortune. If you succeed, please share the bounty.

When I was kid I used to look for elm saplings and knotty red oaks. Usually found them on north or northwest Side old oaks and elm saplings when leaving must produce morel spores. One of weirdest places I found one was at old farm in root cell under rotted wood. Was dark 99% of time and of course in spring moist. I guess the ground temperature was just right at time in cellar.
