The operative word in comfort food is "food" gnocchi, pasta fagoli, canoli, pot roast, beef stew, any veal dish, pasta primavera, clam bakes, any beef dish any chinese dish x2 (because your hungry an hour after you eat so eat two dishes for prevention of hunger) sauage and onions mushrooms and peppers and italian bread, red meat sauce, linguini and clams....mamma, mamma, mamma

My dad was the cook in my family, would make wonderful Sunday dinners. On cold winter days after playing in the snow, a bowl of chicken soup, or a stew would be waiting for us , always warmed us up and just hit the spot.

Comfort food to me is those special meals Mom made so well - back when "from scratch" was all there was. Since she was from Mississippi, it was southern fried chicken, fried halfway, then add water to steam it with the lid on. Turn the heat back up, lid off and fry to golden brown - it was the moistest chicken you ever had. Make some mashed potatoes with chicken gravy and homemade cornbread that melts in your mouth like it was the lightest cake. If this thread doesn't make us all miss our moms, I guess you didn't like yours very much!

Take heart jebartle. With your numbers significantly down and hoping they stay there, I wouldn't be surprised if your doctor said you could cheat a little somewhere down the road.

As a type 2 diabetic myself, I'll join you in having a drool puddle. LOL

Nah, you diabetic droolers have got the wrong take on things. After you've changed your way of eating for a year or so like me, you will gag on the thought of sugary foods laden with fat. Ahhgg. Try some of those recipes I posted, they taste fantastic!

I'm going to have to agree with nitakk. There's nothing like southern cooked fried chicken, mashed potatoes/gravy, and okra!

K9:

You are right in that after switching to healthy foods, the sugary and processed foods like cake taste yucky. It won't be processed cake as I find it not satisfying.

I still like to be able to have a decent meal or cheat once in a while on something I feel my system needs as I have been in control for four years plus. I still try to eat in controlled amounts.

Everyone needs to be aware of how to handle their diabetes and do what is right for themselves.

Default Comfort food

Is there anyone out there that doesn't like southern fried chicken?
Sinful as it is, back in the day when I use to travel, there was a place outside Nashville (near Henry Horton state Park) that had a country breakfast that I couldn't resist, Three pork chops, three eggs, hash browns, grits, biscuits and gravy, toast and juice. I know! I know! But I still would go back

I have heard some people refer to peanut butter and jelly sandwiches as comfort food. I think of comfort food is any favorite food I had when I was a child and still love it.
