Each county has their own procedures but I worked for a tax collector in another county for a long time. We automatically refunded any overpayment in excess of $10. It may take a while as this is the busiest week of the year, processing payments, fixing issues, etc. Going down to their office won't help except that once the payment is processed (which may take a little while), they can confirm there is an overpayment and when you might expect a check in the mail. To correct some misinformation given here - all the money stays in the country, none goes to the state. Also, all ad valorem taxes and most non ad valorem taxes are paid in arrears. What we pay in November 2020 is for Jan-Dec 2020. If you sell in December, you will get a very small amount prorated at closing and all prorations are generally done at the November amount, regardless of when you pay. Each title company may handle differently but bottom line is you get no credit for overpaying the taxes. Believe it or not some people overpay their property taxes, knowing they will get a refund just so they can cheat on their income taxes - claiming the higher amount paid as their deduction. Hope that helps.

That may be the worst case, but I think I would apply for a refund using the prescribed form.

Been there, Done That.
I got a check in the mail about 6 weeks later. No fees. Just the amount overpaid. |

Don't waste our time with this... you know what to do to get your money back. Continue to call until you get through. Or go to the office.

If you need a face-to-face conversation on your tax Overpayment, I would go to, for example, The tent set up at the Lake Sumter Sheriffs Dept. properties on 466 and discuss it with the ladies accepting tax payments.

Once your check has cashed print proof from your bank, go to Tax office, complete necessary form required, and you will get a refund!
