Default Garbage Cans

We visited the villages a couple weeks ago to look at homes because we are going to be moving there in March or April. This may be an odd question, but we were wonder where everyone keeps their trash cans during the week before pick-up we didn't see any. Are they required to be stored in your garage or can you have them on the side of your house?

every one uses bags and they are not allowed on the curb until 5:00 PM the night before your pickup. At least that is how it is in our village

Most keep a garbage can in the garage. I have yet to see a garbage can at the side of a house. Yuk!
Here is information about trash and recycling. http://www.districtgov.org/community/sanitationFaq.aspx

This is from a site with a lot of information;

I think outside cans attract unwanted critters and rats so from what I have seen people keep their covered garbage cans in the garage then take the plastic bags to the curb on garbage day.
Personally I think outside garbage cans look like heck, kind of like storage sheds for which I am thankful are not allowed.

You aren't suppose to use garbage cans. Most everyone, not all, but the large majority use plastic trash bags. Remarkable, the trash is not strewn all over the street by animals.

Some garbage collectors require clear bags for recycling debris and others, like Waste Management in the Lake County portion of TV where I live, use recycling bins or people just separate the obvious cardboard and plastics to the side of the trash on recycle pickup days.

I have two garbage cans/containers in my garage. One for waste and the second for recycled material. On pickup days I remove the bags and place at curbside. To be honest the waste container is hardly used, conversely the recycle container fills up quickly. Use of garage containers keeps it organized and hides the material which can be unsightly.

Not only do garbage cans attract mice etc, but with the chance of heavy winds popping up at any time, or storms, peoples garbage cans would be blowing around the neighborhood. (especially when your not home) I really feel garbage bags work fine, and I have no problem with them.

A couple of years ago Mark Morse talked about this subject in his state of The Villages meeting which occurs in April or May after the online surveys are taken.

He refereed to the fact that after the trash trucks to through their is no sign that it is trash day. He also stated that some people would leave their trash cans out for several days before they take them back in. With trash pick up being twice a week I can see some people leaving the trash can out all week.

I like the way it is.

We were told that if you put a trash can out at the curb on trash day, the garbage collectors will take it!

I like the bag system. However, we went away the day before
Thanksgiving and had to leave garbage in the driveway. Then I read here that it wouldn't be picked up until many days later. I hope it didn't end up all over the place. Couldn't leave it in the garage as there were bones in it. Poor planning on my part.

No. Both are seasonal. I wouldn't ask a neighbor to keep perishable garbage in any event. Next time I will plan better.

I have actually put potentially stinky garbage in a plastic bag stored in my freezer till garbage day, then hopefully remember to throw it out. Especially work for onions and chicken that I have cleaned before cooking.
