Default Alert for phone scam issued by the Lady Lake Police Department

This was taken from the website districtgov.org

The Lady Lake Police Department is warning residents of a phone scam confirmed by the Better Business Bureau. This phone scam could be costly if you fall victim. Here is how the scam works:
• Your phone rings once, maybe twice, and your Caller ID will show as Unknown or a long distance area code you’re not familiar with.

• By the time you answer it, no one is on the other end of the phone. They do not leave a voice mail, so you try calling back only to find no one is answering or there is some noise on the other end.

It’s called “The One Ring Scam” and is part of a practice called phone cramming. You will subsequently be billed for the incoming international call if answered and also unwanted “premium service,” which typically appears as a $19.95 charge.
Below are lists of area codes that have been used in this scam:
242-Bahamas
649-Turks and Caicos
246-Barbados
664-Montserrat
264-Anguilla
758-St. Lucia
268-Antigua
767-Dominica
284-British Virgin Islands
784-St. Vincent, Grenadines
245-Cayman Islands
809,829,849-Trinidad and Tobago
441-Bermuda
876 Jamaica
473-Grenada
869 St. Kitts and Nevis

REMEMBER: IF IT’S UNKNOWN, LEAVE IT ALONE!
