I’m exploring the idea of starting a Linux/Open Source Club in The Villages to dive into free, open-source software like Linux, LibreOffice, kdenlive, photoprism, wine, qemu/kvm and more. With Microsoft ending support for Windows 10 in October 2025, it’s a great time to check out these secure, versatile alternatives. Whether you’re an experienced Linux user with expertise to share, a beginner curious about open-source, or simply a tech enthusiast, we’d love your input! Please respond below if you’re interested in joining or have ideas for what this club could offer. If we get enough interest, we’ll form the club and kick off this open-source adventure together!

I would be interested in this. I've been a long time Linux Mint/Ubuntu user. I'd love to help folks explore alternatives to Windows with so many usable computers being forced into the e-waste pile with Win10 loosing support.

I might be interested in interacting with other long-time linux users doing interesting things. I used to maintain a number of servers, but haven't used it much recently.
This probably sounds elitist, but I don't have any desire to teach people who can't figure out windows or macOS how to use linux just because it's free (as in beer). I've always said Linux is user friendly -- it's just particular about who its friends are! |

I think its a great idea. I've been looking for a "Linux/Homelab" type club as well. Perhaps it could be a dual purpose situation like the Villages HOT (Hands on Technology) club, they combine small electronics interest with 3D printing. Nice club too.

That's a good idea, yes, seems like it's either beginners that want to use Linux and open source, or the power users that want to build out services on home servers.

Great idea. Just remember that you are in a community where there are many who find it challenging to operate a garage door remote. If you doubt that, go to any roundabout and observe.
Have a nice day! |
