Default 8 mm projector

Hi neighbors and friends:
I’m looking for an 8mm working projector as a loaner for a day or two.
I have a couple reels of cherished family memories I’d like to preserve.
My plan is to run them on a screen and copy to my iPhone and or iPad.
I know there’s a service out there that will “gladly” make the transfer for a nominal fee of only a few hundred dollars.
Thanking anyone in advance if you can offer this friendly gesture.
Everyone take care and be safe and well.
Best regards.

Have you checked out Costco? They do it, starting at $30 for 150 feet.

Film Transfer | Home Video & Photo Transfer | Costco Photo Center

Also, you may want to visit a few thrift stores to see if they have any projectors for sale.

OP, I think I still have one, I will need to check and see if it is still around. If I find it, I will test and then you can borrow it. I will let you know.

Wow, thanks for your efforts. This really means a lot to me if you have one to share.
Best regards.

I used Costco before and was not happy. Costco actually sends the film out to one of the big firms that does the transfer. They do not clean or enhance the film and actually cut out anything they deem to be unplayable.

I have never used Costco for these services, but I wouldn't expect them to clean, enhance, or include unplayable content. It is a copy service, not an editing service.

Default Digitizing 8mm-Super 8mm film

I recently has my films digitized from 8mm and Super 8mm film to DVD as 1080p high resolution files from a company called Linear Cycle Productions. It's managed by a professional media archivist.

Contact Rich, the manager, at 818-430-2608

Good luck!

Abby

They don't clean or restore any of the film. Most of the good transfer services clean the film physically and restore what they can digitally with a program. The company Costco uses does not and they do not return any film they deem unusable.

I had some old 8mm film converted to digital. Since it was so old some of the film couldn't be copied very well. Remember that since it is so old there is a high degree of it breaking in the projector, then the bulb could burn it. The professionals use a flat screen system to prevent that. You might have only one chance to copy the film. I don't think it's a DIY project, if you value what's on the film. In my case my late father (died in 1979) and my mother (died in 2005) and my sister (died in 2021) were on the film. It was a short film, but brings a smile to my face when I watch it.

Hi Jim,
My local public library in my home town (Mukwonago WI - population ~7,000) has a room with a lot of different video equipment that could be used (for free) to convert your old video media to digital. You might consider checking the public libraries around The Villages (and surrounding communities) to see if they provide a similar service.
