Default County Commissioners Meeting

"I need HELP! On August 22, 2017 I am going to speak in front of the Sumter County Board of Commissioners at 5 PM at Colony Cottage Recreation Center. I think the more animal lovers we have in the room the more willing they might be to take us seriously. I think large numbers of people speak volumes.
I am going to ask the Sumter County Animal Services to implement several plans that go toward changing Sumter County Animal Services from a high kill to a no kill service. I’m going to show them with their own data how deplorable their numbers are for animals that come into their control.
I want them to stop killing 33%of the animals that come into their control. Please take this call to action seriously. Please please show up for this meeting. Angie and I work very hard to get your pets returned to you. I am asking for help because we can’t do this alone. You do not have to live in The Villages to attend.
August 22, 2017 5 PM at Colony Cottage Recreation Center"

Default Need support

This will not be a one trick pony. This will be the first of many meetings to move to No Kill. Sumter is a High Kill shelter.

They want to kill the animals to "cull the herd". They don't want me to even go out to check for a chip or to try to find the owners.

If Community Watch gets a call for a found dog, they have to call Sumter county to come and pick it up. Until yesterday, they weren't even allowed to call me to try to find the owner. Finding owners is something that we have been very successful with. Yesterday, i received word that they will call me AND Sumter County and whoever gets there first wins.

When they get the animal, you have three days to go down there and claim your pet and if you don't make it in time, it will either be killed or sent to the Humane Society to be adopted out.

We have had pets get away from pet sitters while owners were on vacation. Had Lost Pets of The Villages not been informed. The owner would have lost their dog.

See attached memo from Bradley Arnold

Question Can't the Sequence Change?

Not to ask a stupid question, but why does Community Watch have to call Sumter County first?
They can't call you and give you at least a day's grace?
Community Watch is employed by TV and we pay their salary!
It should not be cast in concrete that they have to be called first and it is unkind that they do not even let you check for a chip first.

It seems to me that the way Community Watch operates can easily be changed -- that is, unless there is a part of this picture I just don't understand.

Not a stupid question at all.

The Villages is a government entity and has to abide by government laws. If the county mandates they call Animal Services, that is what they have to go.

As of a couple of days ago... they now call both Animal Control and Lost Pets of The Villages and whoever gets there first wins.

I'm working hard to get people to tag their pets so that the only person who gets a call is the owner.

Back to your comment. The Villages cares about our pets. I've had conversations with Janet. She doesn't want them to go to Animal Services.

I tried to speak with Mr. Bradley when word came down that I was not to be called when an animal was found in and around The Villages. He wouldn't speak to me. I have only been able to communicate with the, then county attorney" Richard Baier. At that time he informed me there was "no wiggle room" to save our pets from going to this shelter. All I wanted was a fighting chance to save our pets.

I wish that I could be there but would really like to get updates. Can I help in any way (letters, emails, phone calls)?

Thank you,

We are continuing the initiative that was started years ago. This time we continue until we become a No Kill Shelter.

We can make changes with Spay and Neuter without killing all our dogs.

How many of our pets have gone there and been killed? How many people have continued to look for their pets without knowing what happened.

We need transparency.

Let people know what we are trying to do. We need support.

Thank you!
