Decided people on totv don't think there are any dishonest people here in tv, so have deleted the info about possible scam.
Sheriffs dept has info and has handled it. Last edited by aussiemom; 04-07-2014 at 07:46 PM. Reason: PEOPLE SEEM TO THINK THIS WAS DONE MALICIOUSLY AND IT WASN'T. SHOULD BE REMOVED |

Could be a spoofed number. There are plenty of programs that will allow you to do that. I would still call the Sheriff and at least report the call.

Call the sherriff, as anyone would deny they made such a call!!!!
You have info that may be needed by the sherriff department, for future use, to catch illegal activities!!!

I agree with other posters, I would still tell the Sheriff's office, just as an fyi.

explain how this works, if you can. We get every day a call from "St. Kitts", which we never pick up. Don't know anybody there and can't imagine why I'd be getting a call from there. I remember reading once, tho, about calls from some islands and when you answer they have access to your phone line to make calls, or something like that. Do you remember that whole thing? Is that maybe what you're talking about?

I know you know this, but is there any reason you may have got the most recent called number mixed up with someone you know or someone who had a reason to call? I have done that, getting a call and thinking I was returning a call and it was the person who had called me BEFORE the one I wanted. I hope that you have called the sheriff or Lady Lake Police or whoever is the law enforcement in your jurisdiction. For you and for all of us. I would do that before I published a name and phone number. I am sure you did.

Do an internet search on the words... You will get a large number of hits.
As usual, someone has put up a wikipedia article that summarizes it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caller_ID_spoofing We handle any calls coming from anyone we do not know (know their voice) as untrusted and suspect. Especially if the call is about money (in any way) or information or is out of the ordinary. |

Criminals probably just used a random local number via spoof program. Im sure if the local people were criminals they would at least block their number before calling you?

I too am pretty sure that was a spoofed number. Dad has gotten a few from a "credit card" company and a "charity". I think since most people are becoming aware not to answer a number not familiar scammers are taking the next step. They are counting on phone being picked up by with just looking at caller ID could possibly be someone they might know. Spoofing evidently is not that hard to do. Just a matter of tricking the caller ID to thinking the call is coming from another number. Could be another city, state or country.

I received a two different calls several weeks back. One call was identified as Verizon and the other caller id had a Villagers name and number. Both calls were for a credit card service. I called The Villagers number and spoke with a very nice gentlemen (listed in TV phonebook) who had no idea this was happening. He could easily have hung up on me since he had no idea who I was!
I called both Verizon and Century Link (phone service provider for the Villager and myself) but didn't report to the Sheriff. I think you may have done a disservice to the Villager by listing his name and number. He may be the innocent subject of spoofing. Just MHO! |
