Default Looking to transfer 8MM cassette movies and mini DV movies

We have about 50 older 8mm video cassettes and Mini DV video cassettes from home movies made over the years and want to create a gift for the children. Many of the tapes are not full; would start recording one of a beach trip and use about half of the tape and then start another at the next occasion. We would like to get all these updated onto a more "current" platform that we can give as a gift. The additional challenge is that we would like to edit them some before giving the gift. For example, there may be a birthday party video that lasted 20 minutes; there may be 5 minutes of that occasion that we would like in the final product so that it is just the highlights over the years from all the videos.

Was curious if others have ever undertaken a project like this and how you went about it. Thanks.

You can either buy the transfer equipment from Amazon and do it yourself or hire a professional transfer service. Hiring a professional service will be very expensive, especially if you want them to do the editing.

Yes, this. We did it for a large box of old slides to upload them to digital. Time consuming but it worked. You can resell the equipment you bought or return to amazon within their return policy.

I just completed a transfer of 20- 8mm cassettes to digital. I purchased a used camcorder, downloaded using OBS studio and now am just beginning to edit. I purchased a used Sony Handycam (no battery but still has the plug in). I think I used e-bay. Anyway, what a relief to get this transferred. The videos were already starting to degrade!
If you indeed have 8mm cassettes, contact me and maybe we can work something out.
