You also might try the darker window tints for the bedrooms. If you don't want the draperies, the roll down room darkening shades and tinting should alleviate the problem. Neither is very expensive.

Sable, a clarification... when I said "wet the cardboard," I meant it got wet from rain, not that you had to wet it to keep it from overheating. We haven't had any problems with this solution.

Ok. When we moved in there was a street light that was right in front of the house and the light came in so forcefully in the front bedroom, you felt you were about to be grilled by the KBG. After going back and forth with TV saying it was SECCO and SECCO saying it was TV, I finally got SECCO to come out and put in a blackening shade on the back of the light. I don't know if they painted it or put in a "black" glass but one side, the one that faces the house, is now black. It helped. I wish I had been here when they came because I would have had them do two sides.

I have always wondered why people complain about light coming into their bedroom at night.
Obviously, they made a poor choice of window covering if exterior light is a problem for them.
In addition, it is so easy to fix if, indeed, a fix is necessary; there are many choices of what to do.

The back of our house is completely black for lack of any kind of lighting and it makes me uncomfortable.
My husband and I have been talking about solving that problem and doing something about it.

P.S. Oh, yes -- Please do get a pair of tap shoes. I need a good laugh!

I think the OP was looking for help on reducing the amount of light that comes into their bedroom at night from a large street light. Whether other people want more light or not is not helpful to the OP. I understand the OP's concern as I do not like light in the evening when I am sleeping. I even had the AC/heat people come back and lower the brilliance of the thermostat in the hallway. I think the suggestion to check with the Villages and SECO people again and maybe have someone come out and see what you are concerned about could be very helpful. A prior post pointed out how that worked for them. Good luck in your pursuit of a good night's sleep!

Another thing to think about when buying a home here. I have two, one on my garage side and one on the opposite corner across the street. I happen to like them because I feel that little bit of extra light acts as a measure of security.

Yes, we have a street light that shines in our windows in fact it lights up the whole side of our house and yard. We like the street lights for safety. We use double lined drapes for the master bedroom to not only block the street light and neighboring post lights from 3 homes but the morning sun (not early risers). Many things including street lights are not what we are used to back home. So our philosophy was to adapt to the situation. Getting drapes was not in my original plan for decorating but now that we have them, love them. Good luck in your hunt for a solution.

My neighbor told me he called SECCO and they came out and installed a light deffuser lens that shines straight down on the street --- problem solved ---- these lens are very expensive and usually only install them for certain areas or enough people request them.
