If you are a cat fancier, you might enjoy this new movie on Amazon Prime, “The Electrical Life of Louis Wain,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Claire Foy. Wain was an Illustrator for the London Illustrated News who in the 1890s adopted a wet orphaned kitten, then began drawing it. His drawings and paintings of playful, silly, graceful, beautiful cats took England by storm and started the craze for cats as pets. Before that, cats weren’t pets for petting, but were work animals used to catch and kill mice and rats. So if you have a cat, you should probably watch this and say thank you to Mr. Wain. Through his eye and hand, he has given people billions of hours of pleasure. (Or perhaps your cat should watch and gain a proper sense of gratitude to the man who led to your cat enjoying a long, warm, safe life of ease and luxury, cared for by eager slaves and preened or fed on command.)
