Default Best Routes to drive from NJ to The Villages

We drove down 95 Christmas week (left NJ 12/27) and hit a tremendous amount of traffic in Washington and VA. We usually drive on weekends and have had very good luck but this was during the week and at Christmas time!! Any suggestions from those of you who use a different/better route would be appreciated! Thanks.

I drove down the day before you did, and I got hammered with traffic when I got to South Carolina. For some silly reason, I thought that the day after Christmas being a holiday would be a good day to travel, NOT!!!!
It has been my experience that you have to time your trip to avoid the DC area. In my case I leave at 2am and I am through there by 6am.
When hurricane Mathew played havoc on I95, I went into PA and picked up I81 and eventually went through Atlanta, but that trip was two hours longer.
Being a snowbird, I'm thinking of picking up a cheap second car and keeping it down here and just fly back and forth when necessary. With I95, you never know what to expect, I've had some very good trips and some terrible ones too.

I come from PA, Reading area, and also use I95 after I83 and the loop around Baltimore. I try to always pass thru the Washington/Springfield gridlock 9pm or later. During the day I try to go thru between 11am - 2pm. I just returned on Saturday and had no problems other than some snow south of Richmond. I also take I295 south at Jacksonville and then 17/19 and thru the Ocala Nat'l Forest then a couple of back roads and it brings me into Griffin Ave right at Spanish Springs.

Next trip in summer I will try I95/I77/I81 which is about 50 miles longer for me but more senic.

Wherever you go, whatever you see, no matter what day or time of day, or month or year, rain or shine, Summer or Winter, Spring or Fall, stay the hell out of Atlanta! I have to drive thru that hell hole six times a year and it is NEVER a pleasant experience. Ever. Never

Going north not TOO bad. Going south AVOID Atlanta.

When traveling from NJ we would pick up 301 from Delaware, take it down to VA (Fredricksburg area) and then continue south on I95 once we are below Washington DC

We travel I95 all the way from NJ to Jacksonville. When we have problems, they are invariably between Baltimore and Richmond. Most of the time the trip isn't bad. We often do go around DC (495).

We come back and forth a couple of times a year. I've learned to use Google maps or Waze with considerable success. Both monitor traffic and move us around jams and slowdowns pretty well (most of the trouble between Baltimore and Richmond). I find it a lot more accurate than my guessing.

Best

We took 95 on 12/10 from Long Island. We left @ 2 am & hit no traffic. We stopped in Florence SC & left there @ 7 am. We crashed early the next day but worth leaving early.

Take I-95 south toward Baltimore, try to arrive after 9am and you'll avoid the rush hour. When you go over the beltway, that's where you'll see the sign exit Towson, stay on I-95 and in about 9 miles exit onto I-895. Take I-895 south through the Harbor Tunnel, this is the old tunnel, toll was $1 last time I went. When you exit the tunnel take the next exit, comes up quickly in about 1/2 mile. It will probably say I-97 Annapolis. Stay on I-97 about 20 miles and then exit to Route 3 Bowie, Maryland. In about 1/2 mile it will turn into a 4 lane divided road and restaurants will be on your left and right.

Take 301 the rest of the way out of Maryland, you'll have some congestion and restaurants at Upper Marlboro and Waldorf. When you cross the Susquehanna River there is a $1 toll. Stay on 301 in Virginia (it's the same 301 that goes through Wildwood). Just after you pass Fort A.P. Hill, Hwy 301 turns south, you'll pick Rt. 207 and in about ten miles you'll hit I-95 South, you'll be about 20 miles north of Richmond. At Richmond depending on traffic, you can go straight through town, they removed all the tolls, or take the bypass I-295 if I-95 is slow. If you take the bypass, you'll rejoin I-95 south of Richmond.

Basically what I did was to avoid the heart of Baltimore City and all of Washington, DC and Greenbelt and Landover, Maryland and Alexandria and Arlington, Virginia.

I think you are stuck with 95.
