We just had a 14" tube installed by the Solar Guys. It made a world of difference in our kitchen area. It's only been in for two weeks so we haven't been able to leak test it yet.

I recommend the Velux dealer found at the Markets of Marion (Sky tech) Here is why:

Velux offers more optional upgrades that are not available from the Solar guys, most notably the high efficiency option. With this you get an additional two panes at the interior seal. Both manufacturers have double panes but with the high efficiency option you will have four.

Having said this all four give you the U rating (this is an 'R' rating for windows) of the cheapest windows. Without the high efficiency option the solar tubes have a horrid U rating.

Think about this you could have a virtual hole in your ceiling without getting the most effective solar tube available.

I agree. Buy a light fixture and install a "daylight" LED bulb.

I would never have a solar tube installed! That is until we bought our villa with a solar tube in the center of the kitchen above the island. Wow! Now I can not image not having a solar tube. And, it has a night light, so sneaking a late-night snack is easy.

Sky Tec has been out of business for over a year now. They were a smaller company operating out of the flea market installing the Velux brand. Unfortunately that also means any installation warranty offered is also gone.

It looks like the "high efficency" option from Velux is to make the product qualify for energy star. Unlike the Solatube which comes energy star rated without the need for optional add-ons. I also don't know of optional upgrades not available by Solatube. We have fixtures, night lights, dimmers, ventilation fans. We have these all installed in our showroom to demo.

Solar Guys installed an additional four solar tubes with solar night lights, what a difference especially in the laundry room and bathroom that had no windows. The solar night lights are just bright enough so that you don’t bump into things and you never have to turn a light on when using the bathroom day or night!

Another vote for Solar Guys. Had them installed in all three houses in TV and one in Royal highlands. Solar Guys always courteous, competent and no leaks. Solar tubes located in the right places, make a difference in your home IMHO.

We have three of them in the "great room" area. They came with the house. I am still amazed at how much extra light they provide.

We rarely turn on any additional lights, except in the kitchen (an Aspen, with no windows)...
