Default Book Club

If there are any readers out there who would like to be in a book club, please PM me. I love to read, and I'd be interesting in forming a small book club.

I'm thinking of afternoon meetings once or twice a month, October to April only, as I'm a seasonal resident.

Or if you know of an existing afternoon book club, I'd be interested in hearing about it. Thanks.

Barefoot,

There are a number of book clubs in existence. Contact the rec department. They probably have a list.

I did check the Rec Guide and found only one morning book club. I didn't even consider that one as I'm definitely not a morning person.

Now I'm hoping to hear about some private ones or start a new club.

Graciegirl, you're on! Thanks for the offer to hold it in Hadley, party central!
I'm thinking of the second Friday afternoon each month. Does that work for you?

The TOTV luncheon is at Crispers the third Friday afternoon each month.

Barefoot, me to me to me to. Only I am not there yet. Sob! But when I get there count me in. Maybe in the meantime you can let me know what you, Graciegirl and everyone else that joins in are reading and I can live vicariously by reading it at the same time here.

Bare, I concur. I've seen several book clubs, but they all seem to meet at oh-dark-30 when sensible people are still abed. But then that seems to be a universal problem with club in TV. You read about a group that looks interesting, think you might want to try it out, and read further to discover that they meet at 9:00 AM at Orange Blossom or Mulberry Grove. I can make 1:00 PM or even noon, but sunrise!!!

Oh, what kind of books are you considering?

I'd love an afternoon book club and I'm in Hadley, too.

FYI...there was a survey in the Rec News a month or two ago regarding interest in a Hadley Book Club...the first meeting is Monday...I contacted one of the organizers (Ruth) and she advises that you do not have to live in Hadley, all are welcome and to contact her by email if interested:

================================================== =======

"Our first meeting, scheduled for Monday, Dec. 8, 3 - 5 in the Tanzania Room at Odell, is rapidly approaching. We'll be discussing Beneath the Marble Sky. I hope you enjoyed the book. I did. Almost fifty people have contacted me about this book club; so, I think it would be a good idea to find out how many are planning to attend our first meeting. Please email me ruthstro@gmail.com if you plan to attend. I anticipate that we'll break up into smaller groups for the actual discussion.

Since we'll be making new friends, it might be a good idea to wear a name tag if you have one from some other group. I'll bring some blank lables for people who need a name tag.

The rec center will provide coffee. For this first meeting, I'll bring some cookies and cheese and crackers. If you would like a little wine to go with the cheese and crackers, you need to bring that yourself (rec center rules). For later meetings, if you want goodies, we can have volunteers from the discussion groups bring them.

Finally, we should select next month's book or even the next few month's books at this meeting. Please email me with your suggestions by Friday, Dec. 5, and I'll send an email to the group with links to book reviews.

See you Monday,
Ruth"

OK, I've printed off this entire thread so I'll keep all the information and names of those interested in my "Book Club" folder. I've also had some PMs. JohnM, I really appreciate the information about the Hadley Book Club. And also the list of books under consideration. Ruth is saying that she had almost 50 people contact her. Sounds like they'll have a large gathering at a Rec Center.

I'm hoping we can have a small and congenial group, and meet at people's homes. I'm going to wait another couple of days and see if I get more replies. We may want to wait until next Fall to start the group when Just Susan and Ouma can join us. I was thinking of a book club when I arrived in October, but I was slothful in posting about it, so I've missed three months.

Please post or PM me if you are interested in a little afternoon book club. Possibly starting in January 2009, or October 2009.

How did it get to be 2009?? I remember when we were looking forward to 1960!

I can't imagine being in a book club with 50 people. I vote for one with eight to ten. Or thereabouts.
