After any storm, trucks start rolling in from all over the South. They will knock on your door soliciting work. DO NOT HIRE ANYONE WHO KNOCKS ON YOUR DOOR. Before you hire a roofer, handyman, electrician, etc. Check them out. Ask your neighbor who they use, check FL Sunbiz to see if their company is legit. Physically look at their insurance policy. Check to see if their trade requires a license. Call Seniors Vs Crime. Check the BBB. Last but not least do not give anyone money upfront. REMEMBER if an uninsured worker is injured on your property, he can own your house with a Lawsuit. Be Smart Not Sorry.

Very good advice and post. Again, NEVER give anyone money up front for work on your property.

I can’t imagine scammers wasting their time here. It’s obvious we didn’t sustain any damage. But I guess you never know. Older folks do seem to be easier targets.

Not true. In FL, you cannot lose your house or your retirement in a lawsuit. A legitimate business person should know this. Florida is considered one of the best states for asset protection because of its generous creditor exemption laws. Florida law provides unlimited homestead protection and protects tenants by entireties assets, head of household wages, retirement accounts, annuities, life insurance, disability insurance, and more. |

Ten years ago a girlfriend of mine in New Jersey get a foot of water in her finished basement after a big storm and a failed sump pump. I worked for two days removing water and cutting up and carrying wet carpet. Horrible work! Two guys from Georgia showed up in a big truck and offered to pull out the rest of the flooring and the drywall for $37,000. They worked hard for two days, did the work, and left a mountain of debris on the driveway in front of the garage. I’m in awe of guys who can work that hard, but it’s definitely whatever the market will bear, and if you won’t pay, there is someone down the street who will. |

Answered the doorbell and a saleslady asked me if I needed my bush trimmed.
Me: "Does it come with a shampoo?" I'll see myself out.... ![]() |

Sad thing is a lot of people do give maintenance men full payment up front, then they never see them again. Actually I never give a maintenance company any money until it’s done & done the way you want. But use your good judgement!

A number of them "knocked on the doors" offering their help/services. There were not and are not enough local contractors to respond to major event. Yes, be careful and be smart..............but you need to do that with local contractors.

Better yet, never answer the door unless you know someone is coming. That's how I got robbed in NY. I haven't opened my front door since 1991!

I wouldn't trust someone that I didn't contact to check my roof - they might sabotage it.
