If someone buys you a gift certificate for $50, you should get $50. I never heard of you losing the rest. If you get a gift certificate to Walmart, and spend $30, you expect them to keep the rest and not give you change? I never saw gift certificates work that way.

That's incorrect because the gift certificate is a purchased item...eg: $50 card was purchased for $50. A coupon is different, but when someone pays for a gift card, the establishment was given the entire amount. If they choose to not give change then they issue a due bill.
