Default Warning! sink hole/road colapse on Buena Vista blvd

I seen what I believe is a very dangerous sink hole in the Buena Vista golf cart trail today. The hole is located on the south bound side of the trail between lake Miona rec center and Sea Breeze rec center. It is about 3 foot around and at least that deep. right at the curb. if it is hit by a cart wheel or a bike wheel it would do some damage!! I reported it to the gate guard at the Odel circle gate and he said he would report it. Sure hope he did!!

Default Buena Vista sinkhole on cart trail

My wife encountered a sinkhole in the Buena Vista trail heading south between Liberty and Seabreeze. Apparently it had just happened as there were no cones or warning tape. It was about 3-4 ft wide and 3-4ft. deep. She was able to ascertain that it had been reported. Wondered if anyone has an update? DGx2

Anything new to report on this sink hole? Any more in the vicinity?

We had over an inch of rain the day before yesterday and probably two inches yesterday. It causes sinkholes. That is a lot of rain.

Gracie, Was it the last period of heavy rains (2-3 months ago) that also coincided with the sink holes at TV?

Can someone post a picture of this? This is the way we typically go to reach LSL from our home when we are there. Thanks,

The two spots referred to are not sink holes. Just where they have removed patches of black top that got a little cracked and dented. They are both only three or four inches deep now that they have removed the cracked blacktop. They are now pending being refilled with new blacktop and they are clearly marked with cones.

For those of us who are absent, could you clarify? Sink holes or repair to black top?

Not sinkholes. I go by there on my cart everyday. I did again today at about 1 o'clock. Both are marked by cones and both are 3 INCH deep rectangles about 2 feet by 4 feet that have had the blacktop cut out for repair. One of the two has a dinner plate size spot that is washed away by rain, but that is off the path on the opposite side of the curb from the actual path surface.

The sky is not falling and these are not sinkholes.

I went over the day of the OP and every day since. NO SINK HOLE. NO 3 FOOT DEEP DROP OFF. Keep in mind, we live on a sand bar and rain can cause run off outside of the curb of these paths that could give the appearance of a tiny sink hole, but that is not the case this time. Just cracked blacktop and some washed away sand outside the curb in the same area. With all the rain we have had this year, it is probably connected in that sand being washed away right outside the concrete curb could weaken the blacktop close by and may be the reason the blacktop cracked and needs replaced in that location, but a sink hole is a different animal all together. What I say at the least is TRUE and at the worst is erosion. Have a nice ride and don't fret.

627.706, Florida Statutes, 'sinkhole' means a landform created by subsidence of soil, sediment, or rock as underlying strata are dissolved by groundwater." Sinkholes are common and a natural occurrence in Florida due to the process of water dissolving the porous limestone. This process will slowly create underground cavities that can cause the top ground to collapse or sink.

What this says in a nut shell is that sinkhole are from THE BOTTOM UP. What we have in this situation is to much rain washing away a little sand outside the path and may have caused the path to weaken and crack out into the path about 18 inches from the curb. they will cut out the cracked blacktop, put in some crushed gravel and patch the hole with blacktop. When and if you have a true sink hole, the maintenance folks will rope off not only the area, but a good distance in all directions from the sink hole.

It is a problem all over Florida. Little ones and big ones after a lot of rain. It is hard to know whether it is a sinkhole or a washout or a settling. We are on sand here.

I see no reason why Golfingnut, a reasonable person, who has seen it several times wouldn't give us his fair and honest assessment.
