Just had one changed by Sun Kool on warranty. No Charge. We had a five year warranty free with the home purchase and when it expired, paid for a 5 year extension.
Took the technician all of 5 minutes. He had to replace a wire attached to the capacitor interface also.

Just changed out the AC capacitor last Thursday. Did it our self for $20. Bought the part from a SUN COOL guy sitting at the Post office. Employee called into his office to see if it was OK to sell. Consider yourself lucky he only wanted to sell the capacitor instead of a condenser or a whole new unit for $5000+

I just had mine changed last week. Was under the 5year warranty . My unit was only one and a half years old. I wonder how often those things go out? Could it be that the extreme heat takes its toll on it? It's a easy part to replace. What happens is your fan will run but the compressor will not kick on, so no conditioned air.

It does seem that a whole lot of folks have to have the A/C capacitor replaced. I did about 2 years ago. Cost was about $145. Some guys who are skilled at electrical work will do it themselves. However, you have to be extremely careful with a capacitor. Lots of electricity in those things and it could knock you for a loop - or worse - if you touch the wrong part.
