I just combed through TECO's gas subsidiary's web site and found nothing about them offering interior gas line protection.

Peoples Gas

Are you sure the offering you received was from TECO? Maybe they are offering it and it's just not noted on their web site......?

I'd give them a call! IF it is from them....they'll be able to give you the answers you need/want.

I received a notice from them, too. They also have (for an additional fee) coverage for your water lines. I wondered the same thing, hoopsterdad.

I guess I didn't look at it very closely before I threw it out.

There have been several "Letters To The Editor" and an article from Seniors Vs Crime on this very subject in the POA Bulletin. Look at the article on Page 14 in the POA Bulletin called "It's Your Money, Spend It wisely". That discusses both the inside gas line and the outside water line coverages. You can read the POA Bulleting online, even back issues, at http://www.poa4us.org/bulletins_file...etin201210.pdf. The short answer seems to be that there are lots better uses for your money than this coverage.

An earlier such letter sounded fishy to me, too. I contacted Seniors Vs Crime, a volunteer effort who do a tremendous job of investigating (and resolving) issues where we seniors may be vulnerable, etc.

Their response was that, while TECO doesn't seem to endorse the connection, the third party is "legitimate." Please note the quotes. It seems that the third party, which is based in South Florida and actually receives the money has many issues with the Better Business Bureau as well as other watch groups.

Bottom line: not technically a scam, but the service is not necessary, so ignore it!
