I bought a new house in January 2011 and about a year later the Whirlpool refrigerator ice maker failed. It was leaking water into the ice bin turning the ice into one big ice chunk. Under warranty they replaced a part. That worked for about six months then the problem started again. They then replaced the entire unit under warranty. This January the problem started again. I paid about $300 to have the entire unit replaced again. The service man said that he replaces about 5 a week, that he has the same model refrigerator and he bought a free standing ice maker himself because of the problems.

I left on vacation for two weeks. The ice maker again is frozen. The repair service says the parts and labor are only guaranteed for 90 days.

Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions?

Try looking on the internet, when our failed, I checked and found several possible solutions. In our case, the ice maker had a part that broke, and required replacement of the pull out unit. We used Becks appliance repair with excellent results. I do not have his phone number handy, but I have posted it several times, try searching this site for Beck's.

We found that if we are away for a while, the ice freezes together and breaks the mechanism when we try to activate it, so we pull the unit out when we get home and remove the ice(some will still be OK)

Or you can turn it off while away
Either way, make sure the unit is clear before trying to use it.

We replaced 2 under warranty before changing our ways

Mine makes too much and the cubes freeze together so I lift the cutoff wire to turn it off. When I am able to I pull the ice holder out and dump the solid pieces.

Our Whirlpool ice make failed also. We called Whirlpool and found out it was out of warranty. The repair would be $185 so instead we bought a 1 year service contract which included the repair so if it fails again it is covered. The research we did found the ice maker is the most failed component and are only expected to last less than 5 years.

I appreciate the replies but I think some have misunderstood my problem. I have removed the ice bin and melted the ice block but the ice maker produces water every time it makes ice thus freezing the ice together at each cycle.

Ice makers are not that complicated. I am glad Whirlpool is not in charge of the NASA space program. I have never had a problem with any other brand. Why does the Villages use this defective brand?

I googled "whirlpool ice maker not working" and found lots of info, if you have the model number add that and it will provide more specific results. These sites should give you an idea of the problem and possible solutions.

YES! We have the same issue! We think this icemaker is the absolute worst! I buy my ice by the 20lb bag at Publix. I still let the icemaker fill, and use those ice cubes to cool or blanche foods. Most of the time, it's just a big chunk at the bottom of the icemaker.

I took the entire unit out. The mechanism was encased in ice. Checking on Whirlpool I find that they have only a 90 day warranty on parts while other brands are one year. It tells you how much confidence Whirlpool/Maytag have in their products.

And don't forget, in addition to Maytag, Whirpool also makes Kitchen Aid, Jenn-Air, Amana and a few other lesser known brands.
