Default Car registration cost when we move to TV?

What is it going to cost us to get registration switched? Is it like 6% of the cost of the car? I think it depends on the county. And how do they estimate the cost of your car? Was thinking about buying a new car here in TX before we move but don't want to pay here and then pay there to switch to FL registration.

You only pay extra the first time you register a car in FL. The 6% is sales tax when you purchase a vehicle here. Not sure what the sales tax is in TX, but it might be worth comparing.
When I purchased a motor home from an individual in FL, I registered it in Montana (I have an LLC there) and saved myself over $10k in sales tax and I never have to pay a Montana renewal because it's over 10 years old.

We paid several hundred dollars for each vehicle that we brought to FL in 2013. IMHO, you can compare the purchase prices in both states, and add the charge for bringing the vehicle to FL and see what makes sense. Also consider whether you will want dealer service, etc.

I think it’s based on the car’s weight

Moved here from TX last month, the cost to register the car was $424. They issued the plates immediately and the process was simple and very quick, the same for getting drivers licenses. The Sumter County tax office at 466A and Powell is amazing compared to the DFW area, no appointments required and no wait for either.

Sumter County Website:

INITIAL REGISTRATION:
A $225.00 Initial Registration fee is imposed the first time a license plate is purchased for a vehicle. This applies to private automobiles, motor homes, trucks less than 5,000 pounds, with an Out of State or Florida title.

This is what AI says. My experience from years ago is it was more expensive as far as I can remember.
When you move to Florida and register your existing car, you’ll need to pay several fees:

Initial Registration Fee: $225, if you don’t already have a Florida license plate to transfer.

Title Fee: $77.25 for an electronic title or $85.25 for a paper title.

License Plate Fee: This varies depending on the weight of your vehicle, typically ranging from $14.50 to $32.50 for standard vehicles.

Sales Tax: If you purchased your car within the last six months and paid less than 6% sales tax in another state, you may need to pay the difference to Florida.

Local Fees: Some counties charge additional fees.

You’ll also need proof of Florida insurance and a completed application for a Certificate of Title and Registration. Let me know if you’d like more details!

cars need to be registered within 20 days after moving here. You must have Florida insurance, and also that is the time to register your political preference, homestead exemption. Proof of residency is also required.

You must live here for one full year before you can get the homestead exemption.

$225 for each vehicle brought into Florida from out of state, provided it weighs less than 5000 lbs. higher fees for heavier cars, trucks. Motorcycle fees are less. Our cost for two cars and a motorcycle were about $500. I was told it was an infrastructure fee. Remember, Florida is a low tax, but high fee state.
