If this is true, it is scary. If it is, why are we not hearing about it?

Imagine what the crime rate would be if they counted folks driving unregistered motor vehicles (i.e. "golf carts" that can go faster than 20mph).

Had a college professor that said 'give me a subject with 2 sets of numbers and I'll prove or disprove anything about it you want.'

Actually, if you looked at the methodology used you would see that the statistics come from the UniformCrimeReporting files compiled by the FBI, supplied by police departments, in this case Sumter County Sheriff and Wildwood Police departments for the MSA of Sumter County, with that part of The Villages being located in the county designated as the largest population center in the MSA.

Although probably not a perfect reporting system, the UCR is heads above the data collected on crime by the Census Bureau where respondents are selected based on a sampling technique and a respondent may or may not provide complete and accurate data.
DISCLOSURE: I was a Census Bureau supervisor of a group that conducted crime, employment, and economic surveys.

I am having trouble seeing how they got six murders in 2017 for the Villages?

Probably more than that. I would assume Bushnell also has a police department at least

You would probably need the statistics of murders in 2017 in Sumter County, some of Lake County and some of Marion County to reach six that year. I do not recall any murders in 2017 in the Villages itself.

There was the assault at the bowling alley that must have turned deadly in Lady Lake. Redwitch mentioned it but I am not sure what year that was?

Marion County villages are in the Ocala MSA, Lake County villages are in the Orlando/KissimmeeSanford MSA.

The murder category also includes nonnegligent manslaughter cases which are any death caused by injuries received in a fight, argument, quarrel, assault or commission of a crime. Not included in the murder category are
suicides, fetal deaths, traffic fatalities, accidental deaths, assaults to murder and attempts to murder, situations in which a victim dies of a heart attack as the result of a crime, even in instances where an individual is known to have a weak heart, and justifiable homicide.

Perhaps that may resolve the 6.

pauld- The Bushnell policing was absorbed by the Sumter Sheriff's Dept in 2012. There are no individual dept statistics available.

A view inside federal lockup - News - Ocala.com - Ocala, FL

Actually there do not seem to be a lot of prisoner deaths at Coleman that are other than from natural causes. Those would have gotten some kind of publicity.

Let's chalk it up to fake news. As the Sherrif's spokesman confirmed the murder rate was correct so that might seem to indicate that in fact the other numbers are also correct and that they come from the FBI Crime Reporting system via the Sumter County Sheriffs office. As previously stated the 'other' parts of the Villages not in Sumter would have their statistics included within the Ocala MSA for Marion and Orlando MSA for Lake. The 'other news source' used the MSA name rather than the county name in their attempt at journalistic sensationalism.
