I never put any weight on the words "Gulf" Shrimp or "Maryland" crab. To me, those had lost any real meaning like "Kleenex". Especially "Maryland" crab since much of the crab sold in Maryland is not from Maryland.

And I don't think I will ever eat something labeled as a Maryland Crab Cake or Maryland Style Crab Cake. In Maryland kitchens and restaurants those are just crab cakes. When the "Maryland" label gets attached they are too often a poor imitation.

Caught by whom? And how? And is there documentation of this?

But I wouldn't put it past them, and others

According to a 10/29 article in the online paper that shall not be named,
According to the Department of Business and Professional Regulation report, the restaurant was actively misrepresenting the identity of several of its food products.

Here is an excerpt from the official inspection report performed on 10/26/2026:

"Intermediate - Identity of food or food product misrepresented. On the Menu it states Gulf Shrimp, shrimp is farm raised from India On the Menu it states Maryland Crab Cake, crab is from China. On the Menu it states New England Haddock, haddock is from Indonesia. **Admin Complaint**"

Is this a surprise or illegal? Restaurants “embellish” their food dishes all the time. I salute the health department for the inspection they do. Proper care of food and clean facilities are important for public health.

Or German Chocolate Cake and Chicago pizza! And don’t forget Italian meatballs! The restaurant may get them from somewhere else.

None of this will change my opinion of Cody’s Brownwood. Has been my favorite casual dining/drinking establishment since coming to The Villages. Do you think that they are the only ones doing this?
