Our brother in law recently passed and we have his coin collection that we need to liquidate. How do we determine the value? Who can we have evaluate it? It appears that when he got an older coin as change he would keep it in boxes...over past 30 years...plus some Franklyn Mint items.

Thanks for any advice.

Pre 1965 coins are typically silver, and will get at least 10 times face value just for silver content. You could be lucky and there may be a few rare coins that would be worth a significant amount of money.
You should be getting some recommendations from your post, I would contact at least 2 of these, and arrange to take the coins to that person for evaluation. I would be upfront and tell them that you are taking the coins to at least 2 or more dealers. Hopefully this way you will get an honest evaluation.
You may have to pay for the evaluations, especially if the collection is large, and will take a couple of hours to go through.
Be careful, DO NOT DEAL THROUGH CRAIGSLIST.
If you do not need to sell this collection immediately, you may be able to save some time and costs by presorting the coins (Harbor freight typically has nice plastic containers with about 30 or more subdivisions each) by type, (penny, nickel, dime, etc), and then by year.
NOTE: selling to a dealer you will NOT get the value shown on various websites, you should get more than 50% IMHO. A private sale may get higher prices, but you will probably have to pay for the evaluation.

VT has very good advice and hopefully I can add a little more. If you want to get an idea of the coins value before taking to a dealer or shop buy a book on US Coins or get the dealer's Green Sheet. Either of these should be available at Barnes and Noble. Again, to reinforce the other comments, if you sell the coins to a dealer, you are going to get the wholesale price.

Just from the brief description provided, it looks like these are circulated coins. Most dealers will consider this "junk silver" and offer you somewhere the going rate for a troy ounce of silver. If you have coins that have been encapsulated by a grading service, they might/should be worth more. If you have any "wheat" pennies, they should be about $.05 each depending on thier condition. Buffalo nickles should command more than $.05.

Be sure and check a couple of reputable coin dealers, not the places that buy gold and silver. Just remember, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Also, in The Villages, there is the Buffalo Coin Club (I think I got the name correct). Reaching out to this group might get you a couple of contacts for good places to have the coins evaluated. Good Luck!
