I give presentations in the rec center in Collier. The total cost of ownership of a rec center must be huge. And I guess I'm asking for a little bit more.
When you give a presentation you can use a the projector or the monitor they have available. The monitor is 25". I haven't measured it but it's smaller than most of us have at home. The projector has an input that works with laptops that uses a VGA output or Apple not the laptops that only have a HDMI. VGA was introduced in 1987. HDMI was introduced in 2003. This might seem small but the fix is very inexpensive. Buy a larger screen Monitor, Walmart sells a 40" TV for $240 and a HDMI converter for $25. [I'll buy my own converter--I found a cheaper one] But it is a pain in the neck if you get a guest speaker that shows up with a laptop that's fairly new and you don't have a converter. This would make it easier for everyone to give or see the presentation. While were at it. Why can't there be wireless in the local rec centers? Is it really that expensive now? If I see a photography presentation at the regional rec center and the guest speaker says check out this site, I can do that while they are speaking and bookmark it. The wifi helps me think and remember things. [i found a less expensive converter that i'll buy for myself----but if you know the best one to buy let me know] Last edited by tomwed; 01-18-2016 at 08:56 AM. |

Something odd going on there. Other newer rec centers -- like Manatee -- have wifi and state of the art equipment. Only problem I've encountered is some rec staff being untrained on how to set up A/V.

That was helpful and not the least bit sarcastic. I'll talk the woman that runs Collier and ask why the Manatee center has more modern equipment and wifi and how to go about improving ours. Collier is only 2 or 3 years old. I guess I could have gone to every rec center to see if they are all the same but asking here was easier. When I signed our group up at Eisenhower and filled out the forms I did ask the front desk. They said to take it up with Collier. Now when I take it up I have a little more information. I ran into staff problems here with the equipment. I was in charge of the media in a school district and training was a big part of the job. It's best to play with the equipment long before you need it. It might not be a bad idea to write down the make and model of what they have and find the manuals online at home. There are many more conventions than there was 20 years ago. I hope that helps. Last edited by tomwed; 01-18-2016 at 10:53 AM. |

Number 2: In lieu of suggesting all of us pay for the upgrades we're likely to never utilize why not start up a collection instead. While I agree with your alluded assumption that the electronics to do "your" presentations are **** poor and outdated you should take into account where the money would be coming from to do the updates. It's your presentation(and those of others). Either take donations, buy it yourself or go with what you have now. |

John, I got some good advice today on TOTV about who to contact. Our neighborhood group "......." uses Big Cypress once a month. The TV on the cart is very small and the projector only allows VGA and Apple laptops to connect. As you know VGA is older technology that more modern laptops don't use anymore. They use HDMI. Is there a way we could request a larger screen monitor and a VGA to HDMI converter if not a newer projector for Big Cypress. Everyone who uses the equipment will benefit. Is it possible to put wifi in the building? Or maybe just wifi for the person that is presenting using a temporary password? Much of the content that is presented is readily available online. It can be downloaded as a file but it's time consuming and complicated. thank-you |

Rohan, John 11:20 AM (28 minutes ago) to me Thanks for sharing. Let me look into options and get back to you This is why I love TOTV and The Villages. I have a problem. I asked for help on TOTV and I got the email address of the person in charge in minutes. I send an email and in minutes get a response from John Rohan. Thanks's for going out on a limb. It is risky. |
