One of my golfing buddies told me of a time he and two friends went to Glenview. He ordered a beer and the two friends ordered water as their drinks. The server brings the water and the two people, in front of the server, open up their single serving envelopes of Crystal Light and stir it in the water. The server tells them he will have to charge them .50 each for the water. They get very angry, complain to the manager loudly, and storm out - leaving my buddy there drinking his draft beer.

It is the basically the same as I have observed at Lopez several times where people order water with extra lemon and then huffily ask for more lemon and they will get a dish full of lemon wedges. They use that for lemonade and not pay anything for it.

Is it just the "old age" thing of I can do this because I am old or it doesn't cost the restaurant anything extra and I am paying for dinner? Just not right - whatever it is.

This all started back in the '80s when stores started giving out free samples of food. It uncovered the petty cheapness and something-for-nothing in people. Our next-door neighbors used to make the rounds of the grocery stores and Sam's and then brag they had free lunch. And he was an orthodontist!

Those people and their get-something-for-free attitudes! One of my former co-workers, Crazy Jim, would do that. One particularly hot and humid summer day in Washington DC, I stopped at a drug store on the way back from lunch and bought a full-size Snickers. I took it back to the office and told Crazy Jim that they were giving out free full-size Snickers on the street corner about 4 blocks from our office. He grabbed a bag and ran off to fill up the bag with free candy. Crazy Jim came back 30 minutes later, dripping with sweat, and told me they must have left because he ran down the 4 blocks, didn't see anyone giving out candy, and then searched around the whole area and still didn't see free candy being given out. I didn't 'fess up with the truth until the "roast" we gave him on his retirement party a few years later.

I was in Publix a few months ago picking up my online Deli order and commented on the convenience of it. Just order, pick up and no waiting in those horrendous lines. Another customer responded that they did not like it because they did not get the free samples. Oh, my...

My friend ordered Eggs Benedict for breakfast at Athens. She asked for one extra spoonful of sauce. When the bill came, they had charged her 50 cents for the extra sauce. She said she wouldn't have minded so much if they had told her ahead of time.

That's like at Sakura, they charge extra for rice to eat with my sashimi. Never had that happen anywhere else. I still go because I really like the place.

A few years back we had a group of 8 of us, all friends, that golfed once a month. After, we would all go out for lunch at Codys, Fridays or one of the country clubs, what ever we were golfing near.

They were just opening one of our banks or assisted living places and they were giving out free hot dogs with a can of pop and a bag of chips to come and see it. One of the couples suggested we go there to eat free after golf. The rest of us said no thanks, we're going for lunch. They said they were going for the free hot dogs. They said why pay if they don't have to. :ohdear:

Sad, just sad. Mind your own business and we would all be better off.

My husband and I stopped in the Olive Garden for their soup and salad combo a few days ago. We were talking to our server about the incident and she asked if we minded if she sent the manager to speak with us.

The manager who came to our table was not the manager who "handled" that situation regarding the extra bit of wine. She was not happy with the incident. All I can tell everyone is that she said she would handle the situation. She was not happy that whomever that other manager was, chastised the server in question over the little bit of wine in the bottle that was added to the customer glass.

The waitress should not have donated company property (the extra wine) to the customer.

The patrons near bye should not have gotten involved in such a small infraction.

The manager should not have taken action during the shift in which it happened.

The waitress should not have told the customer about a conversation with her boss.

A little understanding and professionalism in missing from all of the above situations.

And hindsight being 20/20; The patron that got the extra bit of wine should have talked to the manager and complimented on the good service that they received (as I doubt the complainers had anything nice to say).
