Decide how much you want to spend.
Paint first, and the wall color should be the first element in your pallet. Consider your floors and any items you already have and are sure you want to keep.
If you want to remodel, do floors, enclose lanais, change countertops, etc., before you start purchasing furniture and keep an ongoing list of expenses and estimates to stick to your budget.
Decide what style you want for your home. Just because you live in Florida doesn’t mean you have to go palm trees and flamingos. If you don’t know what you want, there are thousands of pictures in the internet or the library to help you decide on a style.
Did you bring some heirlooms you just can’t part with and want to decorate around them? Can you really incorporate them to your new lifestyle and palette? Something might be hard to part with, but in the end maybe necessary.
Comfort and esthetics should be equally important.
Decide how you are going to use each room. Do you really want a guest room? Should it have dual purpose? Are you going to entertain a lot? Do you want separate spaces to watch TV and relax from your significant other?
Money helps, but it doesn’t deliver good taste automatically. You can have a great place according to your budget with patience and research. Even if you decide to hire someone, go through the steps so you get what you want and is comfortable for you.
You don’t have to do it all at once. Get your bed, a temporary place to sit and watch TV and take your time.

I agree with everything you said except, the paint first part. Its easier to match paint to the furniture you like, than to match furniture to the paint. I sent my son through private school by doing repaints to match the furniture. Len
