Has anyone used a car transporter to Move their car to The Villages from their old house and if so who did u use? We're u happy with the service? Trying to decide wether to drive cross country or ship the car and take a flight. Thanks for any of ur input.

Driving is about half the cost of flying and shipping a car. We shipped one from the SF Bay area 4 years ago when we didn't have the vacation time to drive, cost about a K.

We moved here two weeks ago, we had our car shipped here and we still do not have it. We keep calling and he said that the other car they were supposed to bring down with ours cancelled due to a death in the family, so they are waiting for another car. We allready had a car down here so we were not in a hurry to have that one. It cost $ 1,000. We are from MI.

If you do decide to go with a transport company, ask them a few questions:

- Will they broker the transport of your car to another company? (getting an additional party involved can complicate things....and some companies that represent themselves as transport companies are exclusively brokerages!)

- How many times will they off-load and re-load your car between your old house and TV? (every time someone moves your car, there's potential for problems)

- How tightly will they guarantee a pick-up date/time and a delivery date/time?

- Will they deliver the car to your door in TV? (some transport companies will want to specify a non-residential drop-off point)

Read and understand the contract presented to you.

linandvin mentioned Exotic and Horseless Carriage - both very good companies with excellent reputations. Reliable Carriers and Passport Transport are also good.

I'm also looking to ship my 72 convertible. I looked into several options but it seems that a lot of shipping companys are just brokers. You set up everything with a broker and they find the actual hauler. Price from chicago to the Villages is around $700 on an open transport. I also called Reliable Transport ( very well known and they ship for all the big auction companys) They quoted $1300 in an enclosed transport. I'm like you still trying to deceide the best option for my girl.

United was quoting me a price of around $1200 to put my Chrysler 200 on an open car carrier from Pittsburgh to TV. I decided to drive it myself as long as we don't drive more than five or six hours per day. We can put more items in two cars that we're reluctant to send with movers. I'm not happy about driving to FL by myself, but oh, well... A lot will depend on the weather. It will either take me three days or three weeks!

We used Dependable Auto Shippers to get our car from CA to FL in 2006. They had the option of pickup at the home or drop off at their hub. Since I had a meeting near their hub I elected to do that. They went over the car with a fine tooth comb and listed every scratch and scuff on the exterior. I elected to put my car on the top of the trailer to avoid drippings from cars overhead even though I was concerned about dings from airborne particles.

They delivered the car to my home in TV on time, and on a flatbed truck. It was in great condition. I would use them again. As another poster mentioned, it was comforting that they use their own trucks and don't sub it out to independent haulers.

I learned from them that different times of the year are harder and more costly to move cars this way.
