Default Mail

This summer for the first time my wife and I have to leave TV for about 6 weeks and go back for Family obligations. This is the first time we have been gone from TV for more than 2 weeks. I'm wondering what others do with their mail when gone for more than a few weeks?

Do you put in a forwarding order? I could have it forwarded to our son. We are concerned about making sure we pay the bills in a timely manner plus we get some paperwork from time to time that must be filled out in a timely manner. The bill we can put on auto pay we have already put on auto pay but I can't come up with a way to take of the rest of the mail while we are gone to make sure anything pressing is handled. Is there a service to use for this?

Probably the best and easiest is to ask a friend or neighbor to pick up the mail for you. If you're going to have someone check your home for you while you're gone, they should be able to check your mail you possibly for a small fee or just as part of their services.

I'm sorry not to have something more specific for you! I don't usually go away for more than 10-14 days.

However, I'm inclined to think that your best source of help/assistance/etc., is your own immediate neighborhood! Ask everyone on your street what they'll do for you. Ask others you know the same question! Before long you should develop a list of folks who'll help you keep current on your responsibilities . . . and liabilities!

We have had good and bad experiences re: forwarding the mail. Since we did not have good luck in receiving forwarded mail from Michigan, this year we decided to have our son collect, sort and send on the important pieces of mail. If you have a friend here willing to do that for you, it would be an option. There seems to generally be a 10 to 14 day delay in receiving forwarded mail. Our experience with having mail forwarded from TV to Michigan was much better!

The USPS will only hold your mail for 30 days but I have gotten away with almost 40 at one time.

Now regarding mail forwarding it can be risky and can add a couple weeks to catch up to you. Also some bills will NOT be forwarded so that adds to the mess.

You can set up a priority mail forwarding with the USPS for a fee and ALL your mail will be collected and forwarded to the address you have selected. I am currently using this plan and it is working out great. Every Wednesday my local post office back home gathers all my mail that has come in during the past week and places it in a priority envelope or box and mails it to me here in TV. I get it on Friday but during the peek holiday season it was on Saturday. Now I get everything including all the junk mail that I normally would be getting back home but there is no problem with the mail that cannot be forwarded as it is included.

Another thing about the priority mail system is that the sorting and handling process is a lot smother and quicker as it cuts out a lot of unnecessary steps.

My neighbor always gets mine. If I am expecting something I let her know to look for it.

Contact the Post Office at Lady Lake about a week before you need to start to have your mail being forwarded and set up the Priority Forward. There is a fee but you will get all your mail every Friday. It works very well, I know because I was a letter carrier in Arizona with a lot of snowbirds who did the same thing.

Last time I checked our Post Office charges $15 per week to forward all your mail using the priority mail forwarding. You can also have the option to forward only 1st class mail, but then would not get magazines, etc. It is expensive over a period of time, but so is a late charge when a bill is received too late to pay on time. If you have an account with Citizens, talk with them about their bill paying services.

If you have a friend or neighbor pick up your mail, they can forward it to you periodically using one of the Flat Rate boxes or envelopes from the post office.

I know this thread is about forwarding mail but I have a question about regular mail delivery...

We live full time in NJ and are seasonal here in TV. I have noticed that regular mail delivery takes several more days to arrive than mail delivery in NJ. For example, a letter mailed from Texas to our NJ address takes a maximum of three days. That same type letter takes more than a week from Texas to our mailbox here in TV.

Wondering what the hold up is with the mail delivery system here???
