Default MVP Brownwood

I am wondering how crowded MVP Fitness is during busy season. Do you have to wait long for exercise machines?

It is fine - don't worry about it.

never concern myself with availability because there is often more than one way to accomplish the same result .

There fees have gone up so much that the average person can't afford to go. Note: It is owned by the Morses . $70 a month plus tax is just too much.

If you're looking for a bargain, first if you're 65 and then you should sign up for The Villages Medicare Advantage plan. There is no premiums and you get your medical care for free, meds at reduced prices at Walgreens or wherever you like, and specialist have a copay of $30.

I mention this because one of the benefits is 'Silver Slippers. Gyms that accept Silver Slippers are free, between Morse and Buena Vista on the north side of Hwy 44, that's about a mile or so east of Brownwood, is Anytime Fitness. Yes, the name means you can go there anytime, they give you a key, and you pay nothing.

For the rest of us, I've been a member of MVP Brownwood since May 10, 2014 and usually can be found there most weekday mornings. I take two classes, one is Group Power on M-W-F at 10:15 and we have about 40 people in class. It's close quarters but enough room for everyone, each of us have our own bench and barbell with weights. In July the same class will have between 16 and 25 people.

I also take Yoga 2 days a week Tue and Thur at 10:30 and we have about 45 people in class and everyone has a mat. The room is big and we don't usually have any problems. In the Oct - Feb period when it did get a little more crowded, they added a second class at 11:45. I also believe Suzanne our instructor is great, I've had others before and skipped the class, now I enjoy going. In the summer Yoga class might only have 25 to 30. These crowds will all be gone by the end of April, you can already see them dwindling.

These are just times that I go, they also have Group Power on Tue and Thur at 9am, and Yoga on M-W-F at 9am. So there are plenty of classes and in the general workout area, I might wait 5 minutes to get one one of the 20 trendmills. The free weights sometimes I'll move to a machine if all 3 benches are in use. Most people don't use a bench more than 10 minutes. I mention class times, those are mornings, they all start over again in the afternoon and the evening. So if you want Yoga, Zuma, Group Power, or whatever at 6pm, they'll probably have something.

As far as prices, my rates has never gone up and when I joined I was told my monthly rate would never change. I pay $60 for one person and $42 for a second person, so it's $102 plus tax. We hear stories about the rec centers, where space is so limited in their classes you have to show up an hour early to get a ticket and then come back for the class. When you're retired, I don't want to waste my time with games, if you want free, they'll be crowds, it's worth it to pay for a private club.

Here's your homework assignment, who owns MVP? How much does it cost to join and how often will your rates go up?

Have you checked out ''To Your Health Fitness" on 441/27 across from Oakwood BBQ. It opened last spring, they have a 60' indoor pool and they only charge $20 a month if two people join. They also have organized classes, but I believe they are extra.

Really? Are you certain they own it? Where did you find that information?

Like I posted before, my monthly dues are the same as when I joined in 2014, $60 a month. I haven't heard of any increases. Go to the front desk and ask, they have two choices. I put mine on my credit card and it's automatically charged on the 2nd of each month, I never see the bill. I paid a small initiation fee, it was $150 but was prorated and I only paid about $75 the first month initiation. I was told the monthly membership rate would never change and I could freeze my membership once a year. It hasn't changed in almost 3 years.

The second choice is to pay the year in advance. Multiply 12 x $60, so it's somwhere around that amount. They do give a small discount and you don't pay the $150 initiation. However since you've paid for the year in advance you can't freeze your membership and the rate can go up from year to year.

They do give potential members 3 days to come and go free of charge if you inquire at the front desk. If another member takes you there or gives you a card, you get 5 days free. Usually you should be able to tell in a couple of days if this is for you. They also run a special every summer, 3 months for $150, that should be coming up soon, look for ads in the Sun.
