In discussions with 3 contractors, the requirement for a permit was mentioned. After asking many questions, and getting conflicting answers, I was referred to PUBLIC WORKS, who told me a permit was required.

It appears, but I did not confirm, if the driveway expansion goes all the way to the street, you need to get a permit. Either the contractor or the homeowner can get the permit, and if it is for a house, there is no cost.

I am passing along this information because I was given the wrong information at least twice when talking to Sumter County employees. Make sure that if you are planning this type of project, that you double check with public works. It typically takes 3 to 5 days for the permit to be approved, and no work is supposed to take place until the permit is approved.

I can provide a copy of the email from public works requiring the permit if anyone is interested.

Hope this helps.
Can you please reply with the email from public works with contact information. Thanks

If you are in The Villages of Fruitland Park you might have to deal with the City of Fruitland Park also but I don't know for sure.

Bnaumann, sorry the email from Public Works was deleted after the project was completed, but if you go to Sumter County Building dept (Pinellas Plaza) and ask for the Public Works contact info, they can give it to you. They also have the zero cost permit application. You can fill this out(not necessary for the contractor to do this), and you will need to attach the ARC approval form.
Send me a PM if you would like to discuss or need more info.

UPDATE: driveway to be painted next week.

not too surprised when talking about Sumter County officials......it seems that there are problems from the court right down to the DMV. Probably lack of training for the employees.

My experience with the DMV could not have better. Friendly, professional, well trained, and efficient.

Default Drive way expansion update

All,

Here is the update of our driveway project, before and after, the expansion was just painted this morning. Jay did a great job, especially matching the cobblestone pattern. The slight 'color' difference is due to the difference in the texture of the new concrete.
