The latest update for the Garmin line of GPS products are now available from Garmin. If you have a life time update you are reminded that if after 2 years of NOT updating Garmin will remove your unit from their database.
The latest version is 2014.10 and was released on 6/122013. You can go to Map Quest and search on TV and get a good idea as to the streets south of 466a and between Buena Vista and Morse that are now covered in the latest update. Now west of Buena Vista is a different story. Pinellas Pl is shown going all the way to 466a. Streets that are covered are west of Buena Vista are: Veranda Pl Eleanor Ln Alva Ter Tallsman Ct Isleworth Cir Ida Ct Streets NOT covered are: Yearling Way Useppa Oaks Ln Apache Ct Border Ct Falls Ave Java Ter Quasar Ave Oak Point Ter Cedar Grove Loop Ridge Ct Hammock Ln Hardy Dr Not shown all the way from Pinellas Pl to Buena Vista Blvd Canyon Ave Barrow Ln Buttercup Way Overstreet Pl Nutwood Ave Upton St Vickers Ct Harvest Ct Rainsong Ave Altair Path Nighthawk Ter Between Buena Vista and Morse what is shown on Map Quest is the same as what Garmin is now showing. I have had to get a SD card as the capacity of my Garmin is not big enough to hold the new update. I got the micro card and can't seem to get it to go into the slot right. Does anyone know if the card goes with the writing facing front and the gold bars in the back or visa versa. When I get to the window that askes to insert the card the little ball keeps going around as it searches for the SD card which I have put in I thought. Any ideas would be appreciated.
LW888 BTW I have a Macbook pro and a usb cable from the garmin to the MBP.

You may have put the card in upside down. Take it out and flip it over and reinstall. DO NOT FORCE the card into the slot as it should go in fairly easily.

I like the idea of eliminating the voices and anything else we never use. However, when I look for the option to delete, I can't find the way to do it. Can anyone help me with this? Also, can I just update the part of the map that we currently use? I really only need the Eastern part of the states in order to get us back to Canada through the changes in the highways. In June we got to the end of 69 near port huron and I was led the wrong way and couldn't get back to the Blue Water Bridge without stopping at the gas station. It was only then that I realized our gps map was outdated. Thanks for any help.

First of all what model of GPS do you have? On earlier Garmin units you just need to plug them into your computer and use Windows Explorer to view the files. First of all you will want to do a FULL backup of your GPS to your computers hard drive. Using Windows Explorer just copy all the files to a new folder on your computer. After that you can then go through all the folders on the GPS and delete the languages you do not want.
On newer Garmin units you have to go in and change the device type setting to Mass Storage. To do this hit the Volume icon on the main screen and this will bring up the Master Volume display. Next hold your thumb over the upper right corner of the screen for about 10 seconds and this will bring up the Diagnostics page. Next scroll down to MTP settings and touch that. Change the setting to Mass Storage and then Save. Now go back to the main screen. If you don't make the above changes you will not see ALL the hidden files on your GPS and you will not be able to back up those hidden files. Also you will have to have Windows set up to show you all hidden files to be able to view everything. In its out of the box state Windows will think the GPS is a device such as a printer and it needs to be viewed as a memory device to allow you to view everything. After you have made the above change, depending on your model, do the full backup and then you can delete the unwanted voice files. If you use the Garmin Map Updater http://download.garmin.com/lmu/GarminMapUpdater.exe you can select a full update or only sections. One thing to note here on some models if you select only a reduced map you MAY also lose the voice recognition option. Again it will all depend on the model of GPS you own. Another this is if you select the partial map that is all you get. So if you only load the Eastern US and decide to head west you will be totally out of luck. The update process updates everything and not just the latest changes to the maps. VG Quote:

I wonder if Garmin has now figured out that there is a Lowes in The Villages on US 441. My eight month old Garmin GPS couldn't find it last October and I sent them an email.

I got the update end of May when I brought us Garmin Express just to see. Have now a Nuvi 2457 upgrade from 340. Wish instead or besides Yeti language they would have Klingon. |

If some establishment is not showing up on your Garmin GPS you can add it by what is called a POI (Point of Interest) file. You can also add an icon so that it will appear on the screen and also add voice notification that you are approaching that establishment.
I have created a number of my own POI files for things like all the rec centers in TV, all the golf courses in TV, all the restaurants that are golf cart accessible and all the restaurants that are on TV Gourmet web page that are within a 30 mile radius of TV. Also created POI files for all the Bealls and Bealls Outlet locations in Florida. VG |

Connect the unit to your computer and go to "computer" from the start menu then select the garmin. You can then open folders and right click to delete unwanted items.
