I was able to lose 35 pounds in 4 months by cutting down on carbohydrates. Learn more about this easy weight loss diet at the Keto Club meeting this Thursday, October 7th at 1 PM at the Bacall Recreation Center. As an added bonus, many type 2 diabetics have reduced or eliminated their use of insulin by eating low carb foods.

Energy to run your body comes from sugar-carbohydrates. You can also use fat and protein as energy but there are issues with that as well. Insulin is used to store sugar. When you are getting exercise the sugar is used for energy and does not use insulin. Losing weight is not easy to do long term but it can cure type II diabetes or at least improve it. |

Sadly, Keto is not a healthy diet. There is any number of diets that will help you lose weight short term. But, the sad numbers are 85% of the people that lose weight regain it and more.
The most successful diet is a healthy diet combined with exercise. Healthy also means NOT eating things, like drive-through meals, like SUGAR, highly processed wheat products (doughnuts, white bread, etc). At the root of many of those is the problem of frequent insulin spikes, which at first you don't notice, but over time your body becomes immune to the insulin spikes, and that lead to metabolic disorder and fatty liver, and diabetes type 2. Oh, and Insulin spikes lead to hunger, so it is a vicious cycle. Keto helps avoid the insulin spikes from carbs. And that is a good thing, but it has other issues. There is also a HUGE amount of research showing that the gut biome is also responsible for controlling weight, and a recent study out of Israel shows that artificial sweeteners cause disruptions in the gut biome which can lead to weight gain, so if you are drinking diet soda thinking it is zero calories, it doesn't matter, it is making it harder for you to lose weight. There are natural alternatives like Stevia and Monk Fruit, etc. |

That is true. I started a diet 6 months ago and lost 30 lbs the first 10 weeks by simply reducing the quantity of food I eat, not starving myself by any means, gave up deserts, cookies, and ice cream and added neighborhood daily bike riding for 30 minutes each day after breakfast. We limit restaurants to once a week and eat whatever we want there except for desert, might gain a pound or so but it disappears in a couple days. After doing the routine for 3 weeks or so it was very easy to continue. It's like giving up smoking, if you want to do it you will, if you don't you wont.

We are talking about a multi-billion dollar industry and if it was JUST a matter of making up your mind, there would be many success stories, as opposed to 85% failure rates. You body is a very complex machine. The BEST advice anyone can give to someone else is to talk to your PCP and have then refer you to a nutritionist. Losing 30 lbs in a short time (even a year) is wonderful, come back in 2 years and let us know if it stayed off. There is an 85% chance it won't. I am NOT trying to be argumentative, I am in the same situation, and work with my doctor and nutritionist. |
