The article was on page c6 in the Sun. According to the article there was a total of 9 break-ins this month with one failed attempt. On the last attempt ,alert neighbors called the police and they caught the thief. Remember if you see something that concerns you call the police.

If you see someone parked in your neighborhood or someone walking that doesn't look like a typical villager; younger, dressed differently, what I am trying to say is that if a person is NOT wearing a golf shirt, that should be a red flag.
Back to being serious. When you leave, see if someone is watching you. Wouldn't hurt to leave on the TV. KNOW who cleans your home. Take a picture of your carpet cleaners and anyone who enters your home as a contractor. Most of our neighborhood streets are vacant of people except senior walkers. Have the sheriff's office come and show you how to protect your home and yourself. Don't hesitate to call with anything that looks suspicious. That is how the burglar was caught last month. Wanda is right, not all of us have good jewelry. I always wonder HOW the burglars know who does.

Sumter Detective told me that it's totally random. They are riding around and when they see someone leave they strike. Leaving a lookout during the deed, they pry the handle of a slider and enter the house without breaking glass.

How many of these homes that have been broken into had a dog in the house? I do not think anyone would attempt to enter my home because of my two boxers. I know they could shoot them but have not heard of any violence occurring when breaking and entering a home.

Living in TV has it's draw-back on security
The ole boy was playing golf with 3 golfers, all with guns, needless to say the ole boy told golfers that all 20 foot putts "were good"....giggle

However I think that in general, a barking dog is a good deterrent. Burglars don't want to draw attention to themselves. Our 70 lb dogs is a teddy bear, but who knows what he would do if strangers enter when we're not home. I think the scary thing about the recent string of break-ins is that the burglars seem to have figured out a system where they can fly "under the radar" and blend in.

If they broke into my home, they might want to leave money.
Nothing worth taking and insurance would cover all losses. My sympathies for all who have had their homes broken into. I would have a problem feeling safe, after being violated. No one wants an unwanted intruder in their home. They usually catch these crooks, fairly quickly. Unfortunately, we can only protect ourselves against some inexperienced thieves as professionals will get into a home, no matter what one uses, for protection. IMHO
