I understand Flourscent Light Bulbs contain mercury and are supposed to be recycled. I know there is a recycling center in Wiersdale but I don’t know if they are accepted there. Any suggestions?

Actually I think they are considered hazardous waste, and should be disposed of as such. There is a twice a year hazardous waste drop-off for Sumter County. I usually just put these bulbs in a container and hold for the drop-off.

If they have green ends, put them out with the trash. I have and they have always taken them.

The Resources Conservation and Recovery Act or RCRA is the Federal law that covers hazardous waste, other than PCPs. No these bubs are not hazardous waste. Some states have set standards higher than RCRA. BUT, Florescent light bulbs are rarely covered at the state level. In California they are state regulated waste. One of the very few that is concerned about these.

Now someone will surely get internet smart and quote Mercury, which is RCRA covered, makes these HW. The amount is too low. That is not to say recycling is a bad idea. But don't confuse good ideas with HW.

I think that Lowes and Home Depot take florescent bulbs...at least they used to do so...

I was at Lowe’s a few days ago and saw their fluorescent-recycling container.

Home Depot on 441 & Rolling Acres would not take fluorescents but across the street at Batteries Plus & Bulbs they did. The clerk said he was supposed to charge a nominal disposal fee, but gave me a wink and took the bulb quietly with no charge.

Wherever you buy a new bulb they should take your old one,
Home Depot took our old one when I lived in south Florida
