I always clear the codes at the garage door opener when I move in. Easy to do because you don’t know who copied the remote code and I don’t care what the builder set on the keypads, I start over. Same goes for your front door lock. How do you know if somebody made a duplicate key for your front door? I switch my door locks out for smart door locks that I can operate by typing in a 6 digit code, being close to your phone to the lock, or by telling Siri to open it up. Actually, my whole house is automated so I can operate it from my watch and phone

When we moved in the previous home owner didn't leave the code but kept records of every thing done to the home. When I learned the previous owner had multiple contractors in the home I removed it and never replaced it. Don't see the need for them. Maybe later when I can't do things for myself and my wife.

It also gives the bust out who broke into your car the address that key belongs to.

After 68 replies, I am surprised no one has mentioned this. My opener is a craftsman. It allows you to set a temporary code that can be used once. You set this code and give to to the contractor. Personally, I would not allow a contractor in my house, or garage without someone being home, but to each their own…

That is great advice. Also when buying a pre owned home CHANGE THE LOCKS!

Not sure who is serious an who is not. I believe most homes have a quick set lock.
You can purchase a random key and set your locks to fit that key. You need a tool that came with the quick set lock.

In terms of security, posters being honest people think a criminal will come in through the door. The windows are far less secure and a criminal does not care about damaging your paint molding etc.

For those who will say the stand your ground law. It is not as clear as some people think. You need to prove violent intent.
