To lower the temperature in my garage so my car isn't in 100 degree temperature hours on hours I am thinking about a motorized screen or insulation to lessen the sun heating up my door panels facing east.
What would be better? $500 vs $1,800 |

This thread from last week has a lot of info.
Suggestions for a cooler garage. Remember, without A/C in the garage, it will never be cooler than the outside air. In my opinion insulating the door, which I did myself, helps when the door is down, but only if the sun is shining on the door. Since our Laundry is in the garage and I go in and out a lot, the screen made the most sense. Especially the horizontal slider where I only open a 3' section to exit and enter. The screen has the extra benefits of keeping bugs, snakes, lizards and alligators out of your garage. |

Jus my opinion and sense of humor..........I laugh at door screens.
What a great money maker for companies. If you want a cooler garage, insulate the ceiling. I did it during construction and I've never regretted it or ever wanted a door screen. My garage faces North, I have an insulated door, but I'm not sure of the value. Good Luck.

As far as keeping it cooler, that's a side benefit, I open the garage door every morning then it stays pretty much the morning temperature most of the day. With our laundry out there, we just leave it up, and also an added bit of security. I think it was well work the $850 we paid. I also think the screen makes the front of the house look clean, especially better than an open garage door. See the doors open here and you don't even know it. ![]() Avon Calling ![]() |

Screen serves other purposes. Not sure it's purpose it only to cool the garage itself. On nice cool days we leave the screen slid closed, open the garage door into the house, open the bedroom door & window and the cross breeze is great. With the proper screen you can exercise fully nude during the day (don't try it at night) and you can only be 10% visible. Also on a cool day it's nice to work in the garage on a car or project without bugs or people watching. We went 2 years without one and then got a slider and found it to be well worth having.

I had a solar screen installed in my garage but it really did not help with the high temperatures in the summer; it does a great job keeping unwanted critters out of my garage. To solve the heat problem I had the garage door insulated, a garage vent fan installed which sucks the hot air from inside the garage into the attic, and installed a solar exhaust fan in the attic. My garage and attic are much cooler and my electric bill has gone down.

I installed insulation and vents on my garage door with very little benefit. I decided to add a screen and it has been great. Recommend Shade Brothers on Rt 44. Screens are custom built in there shop. Family owned business and they are vert professional and great.

Solar vent fan on roof will draw hot air in but keep it reasonable and it's automatic

I put a solar powered roof vent fan in my garage and it lowered my average temp by probably 10 degrees.

We had one solar fan put in the garage and another over the living space. Solar Guys did it. Cannot believe the difference in temperature in the garage and the way the house stays cool during the hot summer months. Well worth the money on your cooling bills. |

Power roll-up are great unless you inter and exit through your garage a lot. I have the sliders, great if you have a dog, easy to replace screens if damage.

Remember, everytime you go out, the whole screen has to be opened. We like the sliders much more
