The latest POA bulletin just hit my driveway. Authorities admit to at least ten dead villagers in the past 4 -5 years from golf cart accidents. Didn't see that in the Happy Paper!! Drive carefully....

You have about 55,000 to 65,000 golf carts in a community of about 85,000 residents. Quite a few drive the golf cart in a reckless manner due to a number of reasons (fill in whatever reasons you want) and 10 people are killed in 4 or 5 years. Actually, those are pretty good odds, if you ask me.
Of course you have to be careful. Use common sense and remember those reasons you fill in up above and you will be double careful. The Daily Sun does report on golf cart accidents that are fatal. |

To be fair, the Sun probably reported at least 8 of these fatalities as they happened. True, they haven't written any articles summarizing the statistics or proffering solutions.
A real statistician might be able to estimate fatalities per thousand or million miles to see how the fatality rate compares to auto accidents. I've been here full time since late 2006. There was a short period of time in maybe 07-08 where there was a rash of fatalities, maybe 4 or 5 of the 10. Any fatality is too many but are, sadly, inevitable given the number of carts, miles driven, speeds, etc.

the interesting comment made was that speed wasnt a factor in any of the incidents. just bad driving!

This is me Gracie, the Ambassador for good in The Villages, saying we have the worst, dumbest, most reckless drivers on the planet here. Driving to lunch across town yesterday, I was passed by cars zooming by me and cutting me off on Morse and BeunaVista, a car pulling out in front of me on a roundabout, ignoring the yield sign. I was doing the speed limit. I had a cart pull out in front of me going through the gate. In my whole life I haven't seen so many drivers ignore signs for stopping or yielding as I see here. No laws need to be changed or put into place. Drivers just need to follow the ones already written. ![]()

I'm beginning to think that many of the drivers around here, residents and non-residents, have reading difficulties. HOW HARD IS IT TO READ A SIGN??? And a rather large sign at that! You're right, the laws are there, now if some of the drivers would remember them and abide by them, it would be good for all. After seeing that cart/cart accident about a week and a bit ago, the realization of just how vunerable one is in a cart hit home. You can fall out, the cart can flip, you can be thrown and hit your head on the curb, pavement, cart, getting out of a flipped cart isn't easy assuming you've not broken any particular body part...and heaven forbid, a grandchild is in the cart with you. There's lots of cars, lots of carts and driving, whether car or cart isn't a right, it's a privilege. (Guess I woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning... ![]() |

At least, I do not have to brave Highway 19 in Clearwater/Palm Harbor/Tarpon Springs any longer. That road takes more lives--or took more lives--than just about any other stretch of road in the United States. "According to a Dateline NBC study, part of US 19 in Florida is the most dangerous road in the USA. A Florida Highway Patrol test period beginning in 1998 and ending in 2003, showed the strech of US 19 from Pasco county to Pinellas County to average approximately 52 deaths a year, or 262 deaths in the 5 year duration of the study. 100 of these deaths were pedestrian related making US 19 the #1 worst road to walk on in these two counties. Straight from Wilkpedia". Read more: http://www.city-data.com/forum/flori...#ixzz1odaHyFyX |

I don't want to minimize anyones' loss by saying this. When you consider that there are around 50,000 golf carts in our fair town this number of fatalities gains a little perspective. It's tragic anytime someone is lost in an accident....

Everyday I see golf cart drivers recklessly making mistakes that could cost them their lives. I'm sure we could all endlessly share hair-raising stories. Yesterday I saw a golf cart (not street legal) cross CR 101 without looking either way and without stopping at the stop sign. I saw another golf cart cross CR 466 .. to heck with using the tunnels!
Everyday I see golf cart operators and car drivers cautiously watching for the reckless drivers and driving defensively to avoid them. Bless them!
