Default Garmin Map Update Good News & Bad

The latest map update for your Garmin GPS is now available. It is version NA 2012.30 and was released today. The bad news is that the only street south of 466a to 44 is Buena Vista and that has been included in previous releases. Morse Blvd. is shown to end at 466a. None of the newly developed roads are included.

I checked the Navteq web site from which Garmin purchases it's maps and their maps also do not show any of the new area south of 466a. The Navteq site is a good site to check to see if areas that you may be interested in are included in the Garmin updates.

Now as a side note Garmin has reduced the size of one of the downloaded map files that deals with a feature called Junction View. Now Junction view is a feature that pops up on newer Garmin models that shows you the different lanes of the upcoming junction and tells you which lane to be in along with a visual display of the junction. Due to the available core memory in some Garmin models Garmin has reduced the size of the file to a "one fits all" size but that has greatly reduced the number of junction views available.

If you GPS has enough memory to handle the larger file it can be downloaded from http://download.garmin.com/support/2.../D3060040A.JCV
This file is 775 meg so make sure you have enough memory available or add an additional SD card as required by your unit.

Could it be due to the street not being completed yet?

I know that the area south of 466a is a work in progress but some of the main roads are in and homes are being occupied. I also think the fire station is operating and soon Bonifay will be open for play in a few days.

The issue may be the lead time that is needed from getting the actual coordinates of the road and overlaying that onto the map. Also since Garmin buys the maps from Navteq they are at the mercy of getting Navteq to the updates.

The next update will be the first of next year so hopefully the new area will be covered. Here is a list of the past Garmin update releases and it will give you an idea as to the time of releases.

I received an e-mail today regarding the update and I do not have the life time updates.

On a couple of GPS forums that I read the guys there are really on top of things and it hit the forum pages minutes after the server was opened up for downloads. Beware some people are having no problems with the upgrade and others are having to download to the computer first then to the GPS.

Also since MapSource is no longer supported and BaseCamp is the supported software there has been some discussion as how this is going to be handled. Many people including myself hate BaseCamp but we have to live with it.

Looks as if you already know all about the area in question. Perhaps you don't need a GPS.

I really don't need a GPS for TV and am only providing a service for Garmin GPS owners. There have been a number of posts in the past years questioning if a certain street or area is covered by the latest map updates.

Default Updates!

Well Pturner!

Other than watch Snow Flakes! I had nothing better to do last night but watch my Harley Davidson Garmin 660 load the latest new map for two hours.

Guess it was well worth it. Our premium pile of dirt which is now a premium cement slab is on the Garmin Map.

Our new address in Tamarind Grove is now a " Go To!. I entererd our new home as a destination address! Sorta exciting!

Some day the furniture will be gone, Car shipped down and nothing left in this rental Garage but Ruth MySelf and the Harley.

We will ride outta NY destination new home Tamarind Grove TV-
