Question Gas exhaust vent

I was told by the installer of my new garage exhaust fan, that I should have a vent near my gas water heater to expell natural gas in case the pilot goes out. He said it is code. Don't have one but now have the garage exhaust fan. Anyone have this gas vent in their garage?

Interesting. The pilot keeps heat on a small generator that keeps the gas line open. If the pilot light goes out, this has a spring loaded and positive throw that closes the gas line source. So if you lose a pilot on any gas appliance, dryer, fireplace ow water heater, the gas line is forced closed. So why would I need a vent? The ones that are a concern are the ones that use an electronic ignition like a grill.

Maybe they mean the stack or chimney type vent. You need that to get rid of the CO2 from the combustion. You have that, I'm sure. (According to my husband.)

Installer was Rob S. from Solar Guys. No it's not the stack for venting the burned gas.

we hv a gas HW heater in the garage with a small open diffusser in the ceiling above the heater. this is for make up combustion air not for venting the heater. you need make up make up air for combustion if all the doors are shut in the garage.
