Default Consumer Scam

I received a green postcard in the mail today from "Combined Package Services" in Whitehouse, Texas. It said to call a number to schedule pickup and even included a package number and tracking number.

I thought I had heard of this before while volunteering at Seniors Vs. Crime and I typed "Combined Package Services" into Google and came up with the scam. When you call, they will tell you that you have a package but have to pre-pay a "nominal" charge to have it delivered. Well, they have your credit card number at that point and what do you think will happen? "Nuff said.

If anyone gets the green postcard, toss it in the trash. Do not call them.

Default Scam

If you get a green postcard in the mail from "Combined Package Services" do not respond to this . . . it is a scam! The company was formerly called Alex Package and has gone under other names but now they are hitting the Orlando area . . . the company is out of Whitehouse, TX and gets you to call to offer vacation packages.

There are new ways....
in our industry and others, 'data' publishers are sending out 'directories' and even a check to us for reading the material.
They mine the date from the check and leech finds from bank accounts.
Trikkkkkyyyyy
Here's one poor slob's story:
Several retailers have reported unauthorized withdrawals of nearly $300 from their bank accounts in recent weeks from a company called www.xxxxxxdata.com, which runs a directory service for the industry.

Though the online company has issued refunds in at least two of the cases, retailers want to make sure their peers are aware of the company and warn them to be vigilant about reading the fine print when dealing with xxxxxx Data.

Several weeks ago, Adam xxxxx, owner of xxxxxxx Cyclery in New Mexico, received a packet of information from www.xxxxxxdata.com that included a $30 check made out to him in return for looking at the Web site’s services. He deposited the check and three days later a debit for $294 from xxxxx Data cleared his account.

We were victimized , but because of a tip off, we were able to squash the transaction.

Thanks for posting the warning. Scammers seem to be getting ever more creative in seeming legitimate.

One "take home" from this is, if you never heard of a company, best to Google them before calling them for your "delivery" or whatever.

My junk mail (snail and e) goes directly in the trash unread. I have this basic premise, right or wrong, that no matter what the offer says, what it actually is is an offer to take money out of my pocket and put it in someone else's.

If I need a discount coupon for something I plan to buy anyway, I can find one if available, usually online. If I wasn't already planning to buy it, I'm not "saving" money by buying it because of an unsolicited "offer".
