A few months ago a very close lightning strike did about $2,100 damage to our house on Dunbar Ave. Most of it was appliances and electronics, but there was about $250 damage to the facia on the roof. The lightning came in from the ground and climbed up to the roof.

For the roof repair we got the name of the original roofer from The Villages and requested an estimate. While he was up on the roof he told us that our roof looked a lot older than the three years since the house was built. He took a couple of sample shingles and sent the off to Owens-Corning for analysis.

They agreed to replace the entire roof, with no proration. In our case we recently received a check for the labor made out to us and the roofer, and the roofer got 37 squares of shingles. Waiting for the permit, and the work to be scheduled.

Several other people on our street called roofers, and so far one has already been replaced, and another one is scheduled for replacement.

I have heard that there were problems with OC shingles around the 2007 time frame, but our house wasn't built until late 2008. Apparently, some batches of bad shingles made it into the later time frame.

Worth getting checkout out if your house was built in 2008.

Several homes in Hadley built in 08 have have their roofs replaced as well. It is definitely worth checking out.

I thought I read some time ago that the time frame has expired where one could put in a claim. Maybe someone can shed some light about the accuracy of that!

You would think with all of the defective Owens-Corning roofs installed in 2004-05, that O-C would have solved thier manufacturing\quality control issues. On the other hand, they've stood behind their product warranty. I wonder if O-C now manufactures roof shingles outside the US?

Sorry for being the bearer of bad news, but don't let the bad news stop you from inquiring. Owen Corning's phone number is within these links. Also, Check the compartment where your furnace is. When we bought our preowned home in Jan '11, there were some leftover roofing shingles in there. If you have them you might be able to have them inspected as new shingles for mgf. defects. Don't know if that would help, but I thought it was worth mentioning!

There have been many roofs replaced in unit 136 of Bonita. This is the Baisley Trail area off Canal. These homes were all built 2008 or maybe early 2009. I believe these problems are different from the other issues mentioned by Skyguy.

I lived on a street of 24 homes and I'd guess that at least 8 to 10 of those homes had the roof replaced. Before we sold our house this fall we had ours inspected and tested and they came through ok. But our next door neighbor's were defective and they were getting a new roof.

If your home was built around that time frame I'd contact the warranty dept or the company who did your roof and insist your shingles be tested. You have to take the initiative because they won't come knocking on your door to tell you there may be a problem. Good luck.

I believe they use a 20 year shingle here, so if worse comes to worse, you'll at least get a break on the shingles.

The problem I mentioned was blistering Owens Corning shingles. I never heard or saw anything about any another issue. I'd appreciate knowing what issue you were thinking of so I can see if I can find some information about it.

To be honest, Skyguy, I'm not exactly sure what the problem is/was with the roofs replaced in unit 136. However, the blistering problem in the May 2011 Villages Voice referred to homes built between 2003 and 2006. The homes I'm referring to were built in 2008 and maybe a few in early 2009. All I know is there have been a lot of roofs replaced in the past couple years in that one area. As I said, out of my street of 24 homes there were at least 8 or more. Plus the house behind me on the next street over had theirs replaced. Plus others on Baisley Trail and the other streets in the area.

Thanks for your response. I understand your reasoning and it's a valid one. However, could it be the same kind of defect but being handled as a separate issue? I don't know! I do know that when I first learned about the issue and the extension of the deadline, I did check into it. Our home was built & completed around Nov. '07. IIRC, I found out that there were two types of shingles used and our home had the ones that were not the defective ones.

The Villages Warranty department is 352-753-622. Ask for the name of the roofer that did you house. Then contact them and request and inspection, although any roofer will do. Sack Roofing did ours, 352-430-2773.

Our roof is just now being finished. Took about 1 1/2 days with a crew of 6.

We live in Duval and recently received a letter from Owens Corning saying our roof was defective and they are prorating material and not paying for labor costs. When was your "free" new roof done and did you have to contact anyone besides OC to get it paid in full? We started this process by calling Home Warrantee and getting in touch with our original roofer. They submitted the request for us to OC. Any info you can provide is appreciated.
