Default Hurricane Window Film

My wife's cousin has a house in Myrtle Beach where he had installed "hurricane film" on all the windows of the house. The home insurance even gave him a break on the rates because of this. Is that a thing in The Villages or is that limited to more ocean-front housing?

It's not a thing in TV. The only film I see being installed is to filter/reflect the sunlight.

We had the same thing, in our New Bern,NC house-its the same film that used in our overseas embassies, as a shield against shrapnel. The film is only as good as the window its installed on. If your windows are rated for at least 110mph- don't worry.

The Villages is in the center of the state and in the 7 years I have been here, there have not been hurricane force winds with any of the hurricanes from either the Gulf or Atlantic side.

You might want the hurricane film protection if you lived on the coastal areas. You would also find the homeowners insurance premiums much higher and the hurricane deductible much higher.

All that said, it is still up to each one as to their comfort level.

I used to live 3 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. the only thing the insurance companies would give you a break for was full aluminum coverings. One of the reasons I moved here was because the home insurance was 1/3 of what I paid on the coast. It's really nothing to worry about here...not saying something couldn't happen, but it wouldn't be worth the expense.

We have it on our windows in The Villages. I got it to prevent shattering of the windows should they be hit by flying debris and actually would make it more difficult for a burglar, although they surely could get in with more effort. The stuff is thick. Ten years later we are having some fogging of our slider on one section. Is it the film or the window, we don't know.
