Could have been a ruse to see if anyone was home.

Here's a couple more: Today a man knocked on my door and asked for a small donation towards the local swimming pool. I gave him a glass of water. I love supporting the community. I hate those people who knock on your door and tell you you need to get "saved" or you'll "burn".. Stupid firemen. (I take no credit for the above "humor". The 127+ Best Door Jokes - ↑UPJOKE↑ )

If you take this guy seriously which you should, then this is a great reason to have a camera doorbell at your house to record these things and then give them to the police. We all seem to forget that we are easy targets in today's world especially since we think there's no crime here

A comment above reminded me of an interaction I had a few weeks ago. As I was walking out my driveway a woman walking down the street struck up a conversation with me. We had a pleasant chat for a few minutes and I asked what she was looking for. She said she was looking for house number xxxx where she was supposed to be picking something up.
It only occurred to me later that the number didn't exist on my street. I thought it was an innocent mistake at the time but maybe it wasn't. Maybe looking for house number xxxx was another version of "looking for the golf cart that was for sale" and was just an excuse to be studying the houses in the neighborhood.
